0.16. Observing the Sunnah and its Manners

Allah, the Exalted, said: "And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it." [Hashr: 7],

And the Exalted said: "He does not speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed." [Najm: 3-4],

And the Exalted said: "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.'" [Al Imran: 31],

And the Exalted said: "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day." [Ahzab: 21],

And the Exalted said: "But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission." [Nisa: 65],

And the Exalted said: "And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger." [Nisa: 59] The scholars have interpreted this to mean referring to the Quran and the Sunnah,

And the Exalted said: "He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah." [Nisa: 80],

And the Exalted said: "And indeed, you guide to a straight path - the path of Allah." [Shura: 52-53],

And the Exalted said: "So let those beware who dissent from his order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment." [Nur: 63],

And the Exalted said: "And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom." [Ahzab: 34],

And there are many verses on this topic and as of the ahadith:

Refrain from asking excessive and unnecessary questions

(156) bukhari:7288Ismāʿīl > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Leave me as I leave you, for the people who were before you were ruined because of their ˹excessive˺ questions and their differences over their prophets. So, if I forbid you to do something, then keep away from it. And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can."

Importance of holding on to the Sunnah and those of the Rightly Guided caliphs

(157) abudawud:4607Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal > al-Walīd b. Muslim > Thawr b. Yazīd > Khālid b. Maʿdān > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAmr al-Sulamī And Ḥujr b. Ḥujr

We came to al-Irbad b. Sariyah – one of those concerning whom the verse was revealed: “Nor ˹is there blame˺ upon those who, when they came to you for you to mount them, you said, 'I can find nothing to carry you upon.'” – We greeted ˹him˺ and said, “We have come to you as visitors, to inquire after you, and to seek knowledge.”

al-Irbad said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer one day, then turned to us and gave us an eloquent admonition that caused the eyes to shed tears and the hearts to tremble. Someone said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is as though this is the admonition of one bidding farewell; so what do you enjoin upon us?”

He said: “I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if ˹you are led by˺ an Abyssinian slave. For whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided and directed caliphs. Hold on to it, and bite onto it with your molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.”

Obedience to the Sunnah of Prophet ﷺ is a path to Jannah

(158) bukhari:7280Muḥammad b. Sinān > Fulayḥ > Hilāl b. ʿAlī > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār > Abū Hurayrah

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "All my followers will enter Jannah except those who refuse." They said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Who will refuse?" He said, "Whoever obeys me will enter Jannah, and whoever disobeys me has then refused ˹to enter it˺."

(159) muslim:2021Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb > ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār > Iyās b. Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ from his father

A man ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his left hand, so he said, *“Eat with your right hand.”*He said, “I am not able.” He said, “May you not be able ˹to˺”, and nothing prevented him except arrogance. Then he could not raise it to his mouth.

(160a) bukhari:717Abū al-Walīd Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik > Shuʿbah > ʿAmr b. Murrah > Sālim b. Abū al-Jaʿd > al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr

The Prophet ﷺ said, "You must straighten your rows otherwise Allah will cause disagreement between you."

Importance of straightening rows during prayer

(160b) muslim:436bYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > Abū Khaythamah > Simāk b. Ḥarb > al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would straighten our rows until it was as though he were straightening arrows, until he saw that we had understood it from him.

Then one day he came out and stood (to lead the prayer˺ until he was about to say the takbir, when he saw a man whose chest was protruding out from the row. He said: “Servants of Allah, you must straighten your rows, or Allah will surely cause disagreement among you.”

Putting out lamps and fires before going to sleep

(161) bukhari:6294Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Abū Usāmah > Burayd b. ʿAbdullāh > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

A house in Madinah burned down at night with its occupants inside. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about their situation, and he said: “This fire is only an enemy to you, so when you go to sleep, put it out for your safety.”

Parable of the Sunnah like that of rain that falls on different types of soil

(162) bukhari:79Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Ḥammād b. Usāmah > Burayd b. ʿAbdullāh > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

from he Prophet ﷺ who said: “The likeness of what Allah has sent me with of guidance and knowledge is like abundant rain that falls upon land.”

“Part of it is good soil that absorbs the water and produces much pasture and grass. Another part of it is barren ground that retains the water, and Allah benefits people through it: they drink from it, water others, and cultivate. And the rain falls upon another portion that is only flat, hard ground: it neither holds water nor produces pasture.”

“That is the likeness of one who understands the religion of Allah and benefits from what Allah has sent me with, so he learns and teaches; and the likeness of one who does not raise his head for it and does not accept the guidance of Allah with which I was sent.”

Abu Abdullah said: Ishaq said: “And another portion of it is such that the water remains on it—flat land over which water lies, and level, smooth ground of the earth.”

Parable of the Prophet Sunnah ﷺ holding people back from the fire while they rush toward it

(163) muslim:2285Muḥammad b. Ḥātim > Ibn Mahdī > Salīm > Saʿīd b. Mīnāʾ > Jābir

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My example and your example is that of a person who lit the fire and insects and moths began to fall in it. He would be making efforts to take them out, and I am going to hold you back from fire, but you are slipping from my hand."

Recommendation to eat dropped morsels of food and lick fingers for barakah

(164) muslim:2033dʿUthmān b. Abū Shaybah > Jarīr > al-Aʿmash > Abū Sufyān > Jābir

I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "Indeed, Satan attends one of you in every matter of his affairs, even he attends him when he is eating. So if a morsel falls from one of you, let him remove from it whatever harm is on it, then let him eat it and not leave it for Satan. And when he finishes, let him lick his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing is."

The Prophet ﷺ will ask the Lord for forgiveness for his Ummah after they have turned away from his Sunnah

(165) bukhari:4625Abū al-Walīd > Shuʿbah > al-Mughīrah b. al-Nuʿmān > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon and said: “O people, you will be gathered to Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.” Then he recited: “Just as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it—a promise binding upon Us; indeed, We will do it. (Anbiya 103)” to the end of the verse.

Then he said: “Indeed, the first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham. Indeed, there will be brought men from my community, and they will be taken to the left side. I will say, ‘My Lord, my companions!’ Then it will be said, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’ So I will say as the righteous servant said: 'And I was a witness over them as long as I remained among them; but when You took me, You were the Watcher over them'. Then it will be said: ‘These people have not ceased turning back on their heels (apostatizing) since you left them.’”

Prohibition of pebble-throwing

(166) bukhari:6220Ādam > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > ʿUqbah b. Ṣuhbān al-Azdī > ʿAbdullāh b. Mughaffal al-Muzanī

the Prophet ﷺ forbade pebble-throwing and said: “It does not kill game nor does it injure the enemy; rather, it can put out an eye and break a tooth.”

The Prophet ﷺ kissing al-Hijr al-Aswad
