Caliphate upon the way of prophethood

bazzar:2429al-Walīd b. ʿAmr b. Sukayn > Yaʿqūb b. Isḥāq al-Ḥaḍramī > Ibrāhīm b. Dāwūd > Ḥabīb b. Sālim > al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr

[AI] That he was with his father Bashir ibn Sad in the mosque when Abu Thalabah al-Khushani came and said to him, “O Bashir, do you remember the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the caliphs?” He said, “No.” Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who was sitting there, said, “I remember it.” So Abu Thalabah sat with them, and Hudhayfah said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Prophethood will remain among you for as long as Allah wills it to remain; then He, Blessed and Exalted, will remove it when He wills. Then there will be caliphate upon the way of prophethood, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills it to remain; then He will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be biting kingship, and it will be kingship for as long as Allah wills; then He will remove it when He wills to remove it as coercive kingship. Then there will be caliphate upon the way of prophethood." Then he fell silent.

Habib said: When Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz came to power, Ibn al-Numan said, “I hope that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz is the one.” He said: Habib was brought in to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and he narrated it to him, and he liked that.

Regarding this hadith, we do not know of anyone who said in it, “al-Numan from Hudhayfah,” except Ibrahim ibn Dawud.

The best and worst qualities of women

bayhaqi:13478Abū Ṭāhir al-Faqīh > Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Qaṭṭān > Abū al-Azhar > Abū Ṣāliḥ ʿAbdullāh b. Ṣāliḥ > Mūsá b. ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ > ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ > Abū Udhaynah al-Ṣadafī

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best of your women are the loving, fertile, compliant, and supportive, if they fear Allah ﷻ. The worst of your women are those who make a display ˹of their beauty˺ and behave arrogantly; they are the hypocrites. None of them will enter Paradise except as rare as the white-marked crow."

It has also been narrated with an authentic chain from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal report up to his saying: "if they fear Allah ﷻ."

Raising the hands and pointing with the finger in prayer

ahmad:18877Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > Shuʿbah > ʿĀṣim b. Kulayb > Abī > Wāʾil al-Ḥaḍramī

He saw the Prophet ﷺ pray: he said the takbir and raised his hands; when he bowed, he raised his hands; and when he raised his head from bowing, he raised his hands. He kept his arms away from his sides in his bowing, and kept them away in his prostration. When he sat to recite the tashahhud, he placed his right thigh upon the left, placed his right hand, pointed with his index finger, and formed a circle with the middle finger.

Completing Hajj after reaching Arafah by night or day

hakim:1702ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī b. Mukram al-Bazzāz > Abū ʿAbdullāh Aḥmad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥassān al-Tustarī > ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Fulayḥ al-Makkī > Yūsuf b. Khālid al-Samtī al-Baṣrī > Hishām b. ʿUrwah > his father > ʿUrwah b. Muḍarris al-Ṭāʾī

I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at the standing place (Arafah), and I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have come from the mountain of Tayy; I have worn out my riding mount and exhausted myself. By Allah, there was no mountain among those mountains except that I stood upon it.” He said: "Whoever catches this prayer with us —that is, the morning prayer— and had come to Arafah before that, by night or day, has completed his Hajj and fulfilled his tafath."

Among the Companions, Abd al-Rahman b. Yamar al-Dawli corroborated Urwah b. al-Mudarris in narrating this Sunnah.

The martyr who stands up to an unjust ruler

bazzar:1147Muḥammad b. al-Ḥārith al-Baghdādī > ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Najdah > Muḥammad b. Ḥimyar > Abū al-Ḥasan > Makḥūl > Qabīṣah b. Dhuwayb > Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ

He said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, which martyrs are most honored before Allah?” He said: "A man who stood up to an unjust ruler, commanded him to do what is right and forbade him from evil, and the ruler killed him."

It was said, “Which people are most severe in punishment?” He said: "A man who killed a prophet, or killed a man who commanded him to do what is right or forbade him from evil." Then he recited: "And they kill the prophets without right and kill those among the people who command justice, so give them tidings of a painful punishment." Then he said: "O Abu Ubaydah, the Children of Israel killed forty-three prophets in a single moment. Then one hundred and twelve men from among the worshipers of the Children of Israel stood up, commanded what is right and forbade evil, and they were all killed."

We do not know this hadith to be narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with this wording except through this route from Abu Ubaydah, and we do not know of any route for it from Abu Ubaydah other than this route. I have not heard anyone name Abu al-Hasan from whom Muhammad ibn Himyar narrated.

Disobeying parents is one of major of the major sin

adab:15Musaddad > Bishr b. al-Fadl > al-Jurayri > Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakrah from his father

Abu Bakra reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I tell you which is the worst of the major wrong actions?" "Yes, Messenger of Allah," they replied. He said, "Associating something else with Allah and disobeying parents." He had been reclining but then he sat up and said, "and, unquestionably, false witness." ˹Abu Bakrah said,˺ "He continued to repeat it until I said, 'Is he going to stop?'"

Prohibited times for prayer and burial

muslim:831Yaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb > Mūsá b. ʿUlayy > abīhi > ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī

There are three times during which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would forbid us to pray, or to bury our dead: when the sun rises visibly until it has ascended, when the midday heat reaches its height until the sun declines, and when the sun inclines toward setting until it has set.

The best dua is asking for afiyah (well-being)

tirmidhi:3512Yūsuf b. ʿĪsā > al-Faḍl b. Mūsā > Salamah b. Wardān > Anas b. Mālik

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is best? He said: "Ask your Lord for well-being and protection in this world and the Hereafter."

Then he came to him on the second day and said: O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is best? He said the same to him. Then he came to him on the third day, and he said the same to him. He said: "If you are given well-being in this world and are given it in the Hereafter, then you have succeeded."

He said: This is a hasan gharib hadith through this route; we only know it from the hadith of Salamah ibn Wardan.

The Prophet’s ﷺ most frequent dua

bukhari:6389Musaddad > ʿAbd al-Wārith > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Anas

The most frequent supplication of the Prophet ﷺ was:

allāhumma rabbanā ātinā fi al-dunya ḥasanah, wa-fi al-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa-qinā ʿadhāb al-nār

(O Allah, our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)

Spending wealth and dying without shirk

bukhari:6268ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ > Abī > al-Aʿmash > Zayd b. Wahb > Abū Dharr

[AI] I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ in the Harrah of Madinah at night when Uhud came into view before us. He said: "O Abu Dharr, I would not like to have Uhud as gold for myself, and for a night or three to pass while I had a dinar of it with me—except one I would set aside for a debt—unless I distributed it among the servants of Allah like this, like this, and like this." He showed us with his hand, then said: "O Abu Dharr." I said: At your service and ready to obey, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Those who have the most are those who have the least, except one who gives like this and like this."

Then he said to me: "Stay in your place. Do not leave, O Abu Dharr, until I return." He went off until he disappeared from me, and I heard a sound, so I feared that something had happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I wanted to go, but then I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Do not leave," so I stayed. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I heard a sound and feared that something had happened to you; then I remembered what you had said, so I stood still. The Prophet ﷺ said: "That was Jibril. He came to me and informed me that whoever dies from my ummah not associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." I said: O Messenger of Allah, even if he commits zina and even if he steals? He said: "Even if he commits zina and even if he steals."

[AI] I said to Zayd, “It has reached me that it was Abu al-Darda.” He said, “I testify that Abu Dharr narrated it to me at al-Rabadhah.” Al-A'mash said, “Abu Salih also narrated to me from Abu al-Darda something similar.” Abu Shihab reported from al-A'mash with the wording: “It remains with me beyond three.”

Killing one person unjustly is like killing all of humanity; Saving one person is like saving the entire humanity

quran:5:32

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption ˹done˺ in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, ˹even˺ after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

Because of that, which Cain did, We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever slays a soul for other than a soul, slain, or for, other than, corruption, committed, in the land, in the way of unbelief, fornication or waylaying and the like, it shall be as if he had slain mankind altogether; and whoever saves the life of one, by refraining from slaying, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind — Ibn ‘Abbās said ˹that the above is meant˺ in the sense of violating and protecting its ˹a soul’s˺ sanctity ˹respectively˺. Our messengers have already come to them, that is, to the Children of Israel, with clear proofs, miracles, but after that many of them still commit excesses in the land, overstepping the bounds through disbelief, killing and the like.

Council to contemplate individually and avoiding groupthink

quran:34:46

Say, "I only advise you of one ˹thing˺ - that you stand for Allah, ˹seeking truth˺ in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.

Say: ‘I will give you just one ˹piece of˺ admonition: namely, that you rise up for God, in other words, for His sake, in twos and individually, and then reflect: and realise ˹that˺, there is no madness in your companion, Muhammad (s). He is just a warner to you before ˹the befalling of˺ a severe chastisement’, in the Hereafter, if you disobey him.

Earn Allah's protection by guarding your duties toward him; No harm will come to you unless it is written for you

I was behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, and he said: “O young man, I will teach you some words: Guard Allah and He will guard you. Guard Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah; and when you seek help, seek help from Allah."

"And know that if the people were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with something that Allah has already written for you; and if they were to gather together to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with something that Allah has already written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”

Clarifying Safiyyah’s identity to prevent suspicion

bukhari:2035Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > al-Zuhrī > ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn > Ṣafīyah

She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to visit him while he was in itikaf in the masjid during the last ten days of Ramadan. She spoke with him for a while, then got up to return, so the Prophet ﷺ got up with her to escort her. When she reached the door of the masjid near the door of Umm Salamah, two men from the Ansar passed by and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to them: "Slow down. It is only Safiyyah bt. Huyayy." They said, “Subhan Allah, O Messenger of Allah,” and that weighed heavily upon them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Satan reaches within the human being as far as the blood reaches, and I feared that he might cast something into your hearts."

Satan flows through a person like blood

bukhari:3281Maḥmūd b. Ghaylān > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn > Ṣafīyah bt. Ḥuyayy

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in tomas, so I came to visit him at night and spoke with him. Then I stood up and turned to leave, so he stood with me to escort me back. Her dwelling was in the house of Usamah b. Zayd. Two men from the Ansar passed by, and when they saw the Prophet ﷺ, they hurried away. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Take it easy; she is Safiyyah bt. Huyayy." They said, "Glory be to Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Indeed, Satan flows through the human being as blood flows, and I feared that he might cast some evil into your hearts—or he said, something."

The evil eye is real

bazzar:4247ʿAmr b. ʿAlī > Maymūn b. Zayd > Layth b. Abī Sulaym > Ṭāwūs > Ibn ʿAbbās

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The evil eye is real, and if you are asked to wash, then wash."

This statement, we do not know it to be narrated from the Prophet ﷺ with this wording except through this route, with this chain. Maymun ibn Zayd is a man from the people of Basrah; there is no problem with him.

Description of Musa and Isa on the Night Journey

ahmad:2197Yūnus > Shaybān > Qatādah > Abū al-ʿĀliyah > Ibn ʿAbbās

[AI] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "On the night I was taken on the Night Journey, I saw Musa son of Imran: a dark-complexioned, very tall, curly-haired man, as though he were from the men of Shanuah. And I saw Isa son of Maryam: of medium build, with a complexion inclining to redness and whiteness, and with straight hair."

The believers after Jesus and the origin of monasticism

nasai:5400al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥurayth > al-Faḍl b. Mūsá > Sufyān b. Saʿīd > ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

There were kings after Jesus son of Mary, peace and blessings be upon him, who altered the Torah and the Gospel. Among them were believers who would recite the Torah. It was said to their kings, “We do not find any insult harsher than the insult with which these people insult us; they recite, "And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, then it is they who are the disbelievers," and these ayat, along with what they criticize us for in our deeds during their recitation. So summon them, and let them recite as we recite and believe as we have believed.” So he summoned them, gathered them, and offered them either death or that they abandon reciting the Torah and the Gospel except for what had been altered from them. They said, “What do you want with that? Leave us alone.”

A group among them said, “Build for us a pillar, then raise us up to it, then give us something by which we can raise our food and drink, and we will not come down to you.” Another group among them said, “Leave us to travel through the earth, wander, and drink as wild animals drink; then if you gain power over us in your land, kill us.” Another group among them said, “Build for us houses in the deserts; we will dig wells and cultivate vegetables, and we will not come down to you or pass by you.” There was no tribe except that it had a close relative among them. He said: So they did that, and Allah ﷻ revealed, "And monasticism which they invented; We did not prescribe it for them, except seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with its due observance."

The others said, “We will worship as so-and-so worshiped, travel as so-and-so traveled, and take houses as so-and-so took,” while they remained upon their shirk, having no knowledge of the faith of those whom they were imitating. Then when Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ, and only a few of them remained, a man came down from his hermitage, a wanderer came from his wandering, and the owner of the monastery came from his monastery; they believed in him and affirmed his truth. Allah, blessed and exalted, said, "O you who believe, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will give you two shares of His mercy"—two rewards: for their faith in Jesus, the Torah, and the Gospel, and for their faith in Muhammad ﷺ and affirming his truth. He said, "And He will make for you a light by which you walk"—the Quran and their following of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "So that the People of the Book may not know"—they resemble you—"that they have no power over anything of the bounty of Allah," to the end of the ayah.

The prayer was first prescribed as two rakahs

bukhari:350ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿĀʾishah

Allah ﷻ prescribed the prayer, when He prescribed it, as two rakahs each, both while resident and while traveling. The prayer while traveling was left as it was, and the prayer while resident was increased.

The best voluntary fast is the fast of Dawud

bukhari:1976Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > al-Zuhrī > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed that I was saying, “By Allah, I will certainly fast by day and stand in prayer by night as long as I live.” So I said to him, “I did say it; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.” He said: “You will not be able to do that. So fast and break your fast, stand in prayer and sleep, and fast three days of the month; for a good deed is multiplied by ten like it, and that is like fasting for a lifetime.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said: “Then fast one day and break your fast for two days.” I said, “I am able to do better than that.” He said: “Then fast one day and break your fast one day; that is the fasting of Dawud, ﷺ , and it is the best fasting.” I then said, “I am able to do better than that.” So the Prophet ﷺ said: “There is nothing better than that.”

Combining Maghrib and Isha when travel becomes pressing

ibnkhuzaymah:917ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > Sālim > abīhi

[AI] That when the pace of travel became pressing for the Prophet ﷺ, he would combine Maghrib and Isha.

The best dua on the Day of Arafah

tirmidhi:3585Abū ʿAmr Muslim b. ʿAmr al-Ḥadhdhāʾ al-Madīnī > ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ > Ḥammād b. Abī Ḥumayd > ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is:

lā ilāha illā Allāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lahū, lahū al-mulk wa-lahu al-ḥamd, wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr

(There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.)"

He said: This hadith is hasan gharib through this route. Hammad b. Abu Humayd is Muhammad b. Abu Humayd, and he is Abu Ibrahim al-Ansari al-Madani. He is not strong according to the scholars of hadith.

The best supplication on the day of Arafah

malik:15-34Mālik > Ziyād b. Abī Ziyād > Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbaydullāh b. Kurayz

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best supplication is the supplication of the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner."

The Prophet ﷺ’s request for writing materials

bukhari:3168Muḥammad > Ibn ʿUyaynah > Sulaymān al-Aḥwal > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

“Thursday, and what a Thursday it was!” Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles. I said, “O Abu al-Abbas, what was Thursday?” He said: The pain of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became severe, so he said: "Bring me a shoulder blade so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray." They then disputed, though dispute is not proper in the presence of a prophet. They said, “What is the matter with him? Is he disoriented? Ask him to clarify.” So he said: "Leave me, for the state I am in is better than what you are calling me to."

He then instructed them with three things. He said: "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant delegations gifts similar to what I used to grant them." The third was something good: either he remained silent about it, or he said it and I forgot it.

Sufyan said: This is from the statement of Sulayman.

The Thursday of the Prophet’s ﷺ illness and the final "sahifah"

bukhari:3053Qabīṣah > Ibn ʿUyaynah > Sulaymān al-Aḥwal > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

that he said, “Thursday, and what a Thursday ˹it was˺!” Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles. He then said: The pain of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became severe on Thursday, so he said: "Bring me writing material so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray." They disputed, and disputing is not fitting in the presence of a prophet. They said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is feeling disoriented.” He said: "Leave me, for the state I am in is better than what you are calling me to."

At the time of his death, he gave instructions concerning three things: "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant delegations gifts in the manner that I used to grant them." I forgot the third.

Yaqub b. Muhammad said: I asked al-Mughirah b. Abd al-Rahman about the Arabian Peninsula, and he said: Makkah, Madinah, al-Yamamah, and Yemen. Yaqub said: And al-Arj is the beginning of Tihamah.

Concessions in telling a lie for reconciliation, war, and between spouses

that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The liar is not the one who reconciles between people: he says good, and conveys good."

Ibn Shihab ˹al-Zuhri˺ said: I have not heard of permission being granted in anything that people call lying except in three cases: war, reconciliation between people, a man’s speech to his wife, and a woman’s speech to her husband.

Saying Subhan Allah to alert the imam in prayer

bukhari:1234Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > Abū Ḥāzim > Sahl b. Saʿd al-Sāʿidī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ learned that there was some matter between ˹the tribe of˺ Banu Amr b. Awf, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with some people accompanying him to reconcile between them.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed, and the time for prayer came, so Bilal came to Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ and said, “O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been delayed, and the time for prayer has come. Would you lead the people in prayer?” He said, “Yes, if you wish.” Bilal gave the iqamah, and Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ stepped forward and pronounced the takbir for the people. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came walking through the rows until he stood in the row.

The people began clapping, and Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ would not turn around in his prayer. When the people clapped more, he turned and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, instructing him to continue praying. Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ raised his hands and praised Allah, then stepped backward until he stood in the row. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stepped forward and led the people in prayer.

When he finished, he turned to the people and said: "O people, why is it that when something happens to you during prayer, you start clapping? Clapping is only for women. Whoever has something happen to him in his prayer should say: Subhan Allah, for no one hears him when he says: Subhan Allah except that he will turn around. O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from leading the people in prayer when I gestured to you?" Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ said, “It was not proper for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

The imam may appoint someone to lead prayer in his absence

bukhari:684ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Abū Ḥāzim b. Dīnār > Sahl b. Saʿd al-Sāʿidī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Banu Amr ibn Awf to reconcile between them. The time for prayer arrived, so the muadhdhin came to Abu Bakr and said, “Will you lead the people in prayer so that I may call the iqamah?” He said, “Yes,” and Abu Bakr led the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came while the people were in prayer, and he moved through until he stood in the row. The people began clapping, and Abu Bakr would not turn around during his prayer. When the people clapped more, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him to remain in his place, so Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed him to do. Then Abu Bakr stepped back until he was level in the row, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and led the prayer.

When he finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from remaining when I instructed you?" Abu Bakr said, “It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever is troubled by something in his prayer should say subhan Allah, for when he says subhan Allah, attention will be turned to him. Clapping is only for women."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the voices of disputants at the door, their voices raised. One of them was asking the other to reduce the amount and to be lenient with him regarding something, while he was saying, “By Allah, I will not do it.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said: “Where is the one swearing by Allah that he will not do good?” He said, “I am, O Messenger of Allah; he may have whichever of that he likes.”

Story of Mugith's love for Barirah

bukhari:5283Muḥammad > ʿAbd al-Wahhāb > Khālid > ʿIkrimah > Ibn ʿAbbās

The husband of Barirah was a slave called Mughith. It is as though I can see him walking around behind her, weeping, with his tears flowing down his beard. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abbas: "O Abbas, are you not amazed at Mughith’s love for Barirah and Barirah’s dislike of Mughith?" Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "If only you would take him back." She said, “O Messenger of Allah, are you commanding me?” He said: "I am only interceding." She said, “I have no need of him.”

ahmad:2707Surayj > Yūnus > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Abū ʿĀṣim al-Ghanawī > Abū al-Ṭufayl > Ibn ʿAbbās

I said to Ibn Abbas: Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed raml around the House and that this is a Sunnah. He said: They spoke truth and falsehood. I said: In what did they speak truth and falsehood? He said: They spoke truth that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed raml around the House, and they spoke falsehood that it is a Sunnah. Quraysh said at the time of al-Hudaybiyah: "Leave Muhammad and his companions until they die like maggots." When they made a treaty with him that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came while the polytheists were on the side of ˹the Mount˺ Quʿayqiʿan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: "Perform raml around the House three times." But it is not a Sunnah.

I said: Your people claim that he went between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel, and that this is a Sunnah. He said: They spoke truth and falsehood. I said: In what did they speak truth and falsehood? He said: They spoke truth; he did go between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel, and they spoke falsehood; it is not a Sunnah. The people could not be pushed away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor turned away from him, so he went on a camel so that they could hear his words and so their hands would not reach him.

I said: Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed saʿī between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and that this is a Sunnah? He said: They spoke truth. When Ibrahim was commanded to perform the rites, the Shaytan appeared to him at the masʿā, so he raced him, and Ibrahim outran him. Then Jibril took him to Jamrat al-Aqabah, and a shaytan appeared to him, Yunus said: the Shaytan, so he pelted him with seven pebbles until he went away. Then he appeared to him at the middle jamrah, so he pelted him with seven pebbles.

He said: He had laid him down on his forehead. Yunus said: There he laid him down on his forehead. Ismail was wearing a white shirt, and he said: "My father, I have no garment in which you can shroud me other than this, so take it off so that you can shroud me in it." He set about trying to remove it, and a call came from behind him: "O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision" [al-Saffat 105]. Ibrahim turned, and there was a white ram, horned and wide-eyed. Ibn Abbas said: I remember us seeking out that type of ram. He said: Then Jibril took him to the farthest jamrah, and the Shaytan appeared to him, so he pelted him with seven pebbles until he went away.

Then Jibril took him to Mina and said: "This is Mina." Yunus said: "This is the camping place of the people." Then he brought him to Jam', and said: "This is al-Mash'ar al-Haram." Then he took him to Arafah, and Ibn Abbas said: Do you know why it was named Arafah? I said: No. He said: Jibril said to Ibrahim: "Have you come to know?" Yunus said: "Have you come to know?" He said: Yes. Ibn Abbas said: From there it was named Arafah.

Then he said: Do you know how the talbiyah was? I said: How was it? He said: When Ibrahim was commanded to proclaim the Hajj among the people, the mountains lowered their heads for him and the villages were raised up for him, so he proclaimed the Hajj among the people.

Reason for the stoning of the Jamarat as a rite of Hajj

hakim:1713Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ b. Hāniʾ > Abū ʿAbdullāh Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Anas al-Qurashī > Jaʿfar b. ʿAbdullāh > Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān > al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbdullāh > Sālim b. Abū al-Jaʿd > Ibn ʿAbbās

"When Ibrahim, the beloved friend of Allah, performed the rituals, Satan appeared to him at the Jamrat al-Aqabah and threw stones at him seven times until he sank into the ground. Then he appeared to him at the second Jamrah and threw stones at him seven times until he sank into the ground. Then he appeared to him at the third Jamrah and threw stones at him seven times until he sank into the ground."

Ibn Abbas said, "You are stoning the Shaytan and boasting about the faith of your father."

Hajj rites are for the remembrance of Allah

abudawud:1888Musaddad > ʿĪsā b. Yūnus > ʿUbaydullāh b. Abī Ziyād > al-Qāsim > ʿĀʾishah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Circumambulation of the House, going between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and stoning the jamarat were only prescribed for establishing the remembrance of Allah."

Ibn Masud's manner of stoning the largest Jamrah

bukhari:1749Ādam > Shuʿbah > al-Ḥakam > Ibrāhīm > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd

He performed Hajj with Ibn Masud ᴿᴬ, and he saw him stoning the largest Jamrah with seven pebbles, placing the House on his left and Mina on his right. Then he said, "This is the standing place of the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was revealed."

Ibn Mas'ud's position at Jamarat al-Aqabah

He went down into the middle of the valley when he threw at Jamarat al-Aqabah, placed the mountain behind his back, then threw and said, "This is the standing place of the one upon whom Surat al-Baqarah was revealed."

This hadith was narrated by more than one person from Ibrahim, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid. This is how Surayj narrated it from Hammad in what Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim narrated to us.

Story of Ibrahim ᴬˢ leaving Lady Hajar and baby Ismail ᴬˢ where she searched for water between the hills of Safa and Marwa

bukhari:3364ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and Kathīr b. Kathīr b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Abī Wadāʿah > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

The first time women took to wearing a sash was because of the mother of Ismail. She took a sash in order to conceal her tracks from Sarah. Then Ibrahim brought her and her son Ismail, while she was nursing him, until he placed them near the House, by a large tree above Zamzam in the upper part of the Mosque. At that time there was no one in Makkah, and there was no water there. He placed them there and left with them a leather bag containing dates and a waterskin containing water.

Then Ibrahim turned away and set off, so the mother of Ismail followed him and said, “O Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there are no people and nothing at all?” She said that to him repeatedly, but he did not turn toward her. She then said to him, “Is it Allah who commanded you to do this?” He said, “Yes.” She said, “Then He will not let us be lost.” Then she returned, and Ibrahim went on until, when he was at the mountain pass where they could no longer see him, he faced the House, raised his hands, and supplicated with these words, saying: “Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley without cultivation,” until he reached, “that they may be grateful.” (Ibrahim 14:37)

The mother of Ismail continued nursing Ismail and drinking from that water until, when what was in the waterskin ran out, she became thirsty and her son became thirsty. She began looking at him as he twisted about, or he said: writhed, so she went away because she couldn't stand looking at him ˹this way˺. She found that Safa was the nearest hill in the land next to her, so she stood on it, then faced the valley, looking to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She descended from Safa until, when she reached the valley, she lifted the edge of her garment and then ran as a person in distress runs until she crossed the valley. Then she came to Marwah, stood on it, and looked to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She did that seven times. Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "That is the saʿī of the people between them."

When she looked out from Marwah, she heard a voice, so she said, “Quiet!” meaning to herself. Then she listened carefully and heard it again, so she said, “You have made yourself heard, if you have any help ˹to offer˺?” There she found the angel at the place of Zamzam. He dug with his heel, or he said: with his wing, until water appeared. She began making a basin around it, gesturing like this with her hand, and she began scooping water into her waterskin while it continued to gush after she had scooped. Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail. Had she left Zamzam—or he said: had she not scooped from the water—Zamzam would have been a flowing spring." He said: She drank and nursed her child, and the angel said to her, “Do not fear being lost, for here is the House of Allah. This boy and his father will build it, and Allah does not let His people be lost.”

The House was raised above the ground like a mound. Floodwaters would come to it and pass to its right and its left. She remained like that until a group from Jurhum, or a household from Jurhum, passed by them, coming by the route of Kada. They camped in the lower part of Makkah and saw a bird circling, so they said, “This bird is certainly circling over water. We know this valley from before, and there is no water in it.” They sent a scout or two scouts, and they found the water. They returned and told them about the water, so they came. He said: The mother of Ismail was by the water. They said, “Will you permit us to settle near you?” She said, “Yes, but you will have no right to the water.” They said, “Yes.” Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "That suited the mother of Ismail, for she loved human company." So they settled there and sent for their families, who settled with them, until there were households from among them there.

The boy grew up, learned Arabic from them, and as he grew he became beloved and admired by them. When he reached maturity, they married him to a woman from among them, and the mother of Ismail died. Ibrahim came after Ismail had married, looking after what he had left behind, but he did not find Ismail. He asked his wife about him, and she said, “He has gone out seeking provision for us.” Then he asked her about their living and their condition, and she said, “We are in a bad state; we are in hardship and distress,” and she complained to him. He said, “When your husband comes, convey greetings of peace to him and tell him to change the threshold of his door.” When Ismail came, as though he sensed something, he said, “Did anyone come to you?” She said, “Yes, an old man of such-and-such description came to us. He asked us about you, and I informed him. He asked me how our living was, and I told him that we were in hardship and distress.” He said, “Did he advise you with anything?” She said, “Yes. He instructed me to convey greetings of peace to you, and he says: Change the threshold of your door.” He said, “That was my father, and he has commanded me to part from you. Go back to your family.” So he divorced her and married another woman from among them.

Ibrahim stayed away from them as long as Allah willed, then he came to them afterward, but he did not find him. He entered upon his wife and asked her about him, and she said, “He has gone out seeking provision for us.” He said, “How are you?” and he asked her about their living and their condition. She said, “We are well and in ease,” and she praised Allah. He said, “What is your food?” She said, “Meat.” He said, “What is your drink?” She said, “Water.” He said, “O Allah, bless them in meat and water.” The Prophet ﷺ said: "They had no grain that day; had they had it, he would have supplicated for blessing for them in it." He said: No one subsists exclusively on those two outside Makkah without them not agreeing with him. He said, “When your husband comes, convey greetings of peace to him and instruct him to keep firm the threshold of his door.” When Ismail came, he said, “Did anyone come to you?” She said, “Yes. A well-presented old man came to us,” and she praised him. “He asked me about you, and I informed him. He asked me how our living was, and I told him that we were well.” He said, “Did he advise you with anything?” She said, “Yes. He conveys greetings of peace to you and commands you to keep firm the threshold of your door.” He said, “That was my father, and you are the threshold. He commanded me to keep you.”

Then he stayed away from them as long as Allah willed. Then he came after that while Ismail was sharpening arrows of his beneath a large tree near Zamzam. When he saw him, he rose to him, and they did as a father does with a son and a son with a father. Then he said, “O Ismail, Allah has commanded me with a matter.” He said, “Do what your Lord has commanded you.” He said, “Will you help me?” He said, “I will help you.” He said, “Allah has commanded me to build a House here,” and he pointed to a mound elevated above what was around it. He said: Thereupon they raised the foundations of the House. Ismail began bringing the stones, and Ibrahim was building, until, when the structure rose high, he brought this stone and placed it for him. He stood on it while building, and Ismail handed him the stones, while they were both saying: “Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” He said: They continued building until they went around the House, while both of them were saying: “Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
