0.20. Leading Others Toward Good and Inviting Toward Guidance or Misguidance

Allah ﷻ said: "And invite to your Lord" [Qasas: 87],

And Allah ﷻ said: "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction" [Nahl: 125],

And Allah ﷻ said: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety" [Maidah: 2],

And Allah ﷻ said: "Let there be among you a community inviting to the good" [Al Imran 3:104].

One who leads another toward good will get the same reward as if he did it himself

(1731) muslim:1893aAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah And ʾAbū Kurayb And Ibn Abū ʿUmar Wa-al-Lafẓ Lʾabī Kurayb > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī > Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī

A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "My riding beast has been killed, so give me some animal to ride upon." He said: "I have none with me." Then another man said, "Messenger of Allah, I can guide him to one who will provide him with a riding beast." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "One who guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer."

One who calls others toward guidance will get the reward of those who follow it

(174) muslim:2674Yaḥyá b. Ayyūb And Qutaybah b. Saʿīd And Ibn Ḥujr > Ismāʿīl Yaʿnūn Ibn Jaʿfar > al-ʿAlāʾ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward like the rewards of those who follow him, without that diminishing their rewards in the least. And whoever calls to misguidance will bear a sin like the sins of those who follow him, without that diminishing their sins in the least.”

Guiding even one person to Islam is better than having red camels

(175) bukhari:4210Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Abū Ḥāzim > Sahl b. Saʿd

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Khaybar: “Tomorrow I will surely give this banner to a man at whose hands Allah will grant victory; he loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him.” So the people spent that night discussing among themselves which of them would be given it. When morning came, the people went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, each of them hoping he would be given it.

He ﷺ asked, “Where is ʿAlī b. Abū Ṭālib?” It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, he is suffering from pain in his eyes." He said: “Send for him.” So he was brought. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat into his eyes and made dua for him, and he recovered as though he had never had any pain. Then he gave him the banner.

ʿAlī said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them until they become like us?" He said: “Proceed calmly until you come upon their courtyard, then call them to Islam and inform them of what is obligatory upon them of Allah’s right therein. For by Allah, if Allah guides through you a single man, that is better for you than having red camels.”

Enabling others toward a good cause when one is unable to do it themselves

(176) muslim:1894[Chain 1] Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > ʿAffān > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik [Chain 2] Abū Bakr b. Nāfiʿ > Bahz > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik

A young man from ˹the tribe of˺ Aslam said: “O Messenger of Allah, I want to go on a military expedition, but I do not have anything with which to equip myself.” He said: “Go to so-and-so, for he has already equipped himself.” He fell ill, so he went to him and said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ conveys to you greetings of peace and says: Give me what you have equipped yourself with.” He said: “O so-and-so ˹female person˺, give him what I equipped myself with, and do not withhold anything from him. By Allah, do not withhold anything from it, then it will be blessed for you in it.”
