0.26. Unlawfulness of Oppression and Restoring Others Rights

Allah ﷻ said: "For the wrongdoers, there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor who is obeyed." [Ghafir: 18],

And He the Most High said: "And the wrongdoers will have no helper." [Hajj: 71].

As for the hadiths, among them is the hadith of Abu Dharr ᴿᴬ mentioned at the end of the chapter on striving.

Ask Allah for everything and His grants do not decrease anything from His treasures

(111) muslim:2577aʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Bahrām al-Dārimī > Marwān / Ibn Muḥammad al-Dimashqī > Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Rabīʿah b. Yazīd > Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī > Abū Dhar

from the Prophet ﷺ, in what he relates from Allah ﷻ that He said:

“(1) O My servants, I have forbidden wrongdoing/oppression for Myself, and I have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another. (2) O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I guide, so seek guidance from Me and I will guide you. (3) O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask Me for food and I will feed you. (4) O My servants, all of you are unclothed except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you.”

“(5) O My servants, you commit sins by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek My forgiveness and I will forgive you. (6) O My servants, you will never reach harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will never reach benefiting Me so as to benefit Me.”

“(7) O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were all upon the most God-fearing heart of any one man among you, that would not increase My dominion in anything. (8) O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were all upon the most wicked heart of any one man, that would not decrease My dominion in anything.”

“(9) O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were all to stand in one open plain and ask Me, and I were to give every person what he asked, that would not diminish what is with Me except as a needle diminishes ˹the sea˺ when it is dipped into the ocean.”

“(10) O My servants, these are only your deeds: I record them for you, then I will repay you for them in full. So whoever finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame none but himself.”

Sa'id said that when Abu Idris Khaulini narrated this hadith he knelt upon his knees.

Opression will become the darkness of Judgement Day

(203) muslim:2578ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah b. Qaʿnab > Dāwud / Ibn Qays > ʿUbaydullāh b. Miqsam > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Beware of wrongdoing/oppression, for wrongdoing will become darknesses on the Day of Judgement. And beware of miserly greed, for miserly greed destroyed those who came before you: it drove them to shed one another’s blood and ˹make invading˺ their ˹personal˺ sanctity as lawful.”

Even wrongdoing between animals will be recompensed on Judgement Day

(204) muslim:2582Yaḥyá b. Ayyūb And Qutaybah And Ibn Ḥujr > Ismāʿīl Yaʿnūn Ibn Jaʿfar > al-ʿAlāʾ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “You will surely give rights back to those entitled to them on the Day of Judgement, until even retaliation is taken for the hornless sheep from the horned sheep.”

Warning of the coming of Dajjal and against oppression and killing

(205) bukhari:4402Yaḥyá b. Sulaymān > Ibn Wahb > ʿUmar b. Muḥammad from his father > Ibn ʿUmar

We were speaking about the Farewell Pilgrimage while the Prophet ﷺ was among us, and we did not know what the Farewell Pilgrimage was. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then he mentioned the Dajjal (False Messiah) and spoke at length about him.

He said: “Allah did not send any prophet except that he warned his nation; Noah warned of him, and the prophets after him. And he will appear among you. Whatever of his affair may be hidden from you, it will not be hidden from you that your Lord is not such as may be hidden from you.” Then he said three times: “Indeed, your Lord is not one-eyed, and indeed he (the Dajjal) is blind in his right eye, as if his eye were a floating grape.”

Then he said: “Indeed, Allah has forbidden for you your blood and your wealth, as sacred as this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. Have I conveyed ˹the message˺?” They said: Yes. He said: “O Allah, bear witness,” three times. Then he said: “Woe to you” –or “woe be upon you”“beware: do not turn after me into disbelievers, striking the necks of one another.”

Punishment of unjust land grab

(206) bukhari:2453Abū Maʿmar > ʿAbd al-Wārith > Ḥusayn > Yaḥyá b. Abū Kathīr > Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm > Abū Salamah > ʿĀʾishah

There was a dispute between him and some people, so he mentioned it to Aishah. She said: O Abū Salamah, avoid ˹taking anything of the˺ land, for the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever wrongfully takes even a handspan of land will be encircled with it with the seven earths."

Allah gives respite to the oppressors and the wrongdoers

(207) bukhari:4686Ṣadaqah b. al-Faḍl > Abū Muʿāwiyah > Burayd b. Abū Burdah > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed, Allah grants respite to the wrongdoer until, when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.” Then he recited: “And thus is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are wrongdoing. Indeed, His seizing is painful and severe.”

Advice to Muadh b. Jabal; There is no barrier for the dua of oppressed

(208) bukhari:1496Muḥammad > ʿAbd Allāh > Zakarīyāʾ b. Isḥāq > Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣayfī > Abū Maʿbad > Ibn ʿAbbās

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muadh b. Jabal when he sent him to Yemen: “You will come to a people from the People of the Book. When you reach them, call them to testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them five prayers in every day and night.”

“If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them a charity to be taken from their rich and returned to their poor. If they obey you in that, then beware of taking the best of their wealth, and fear the dua of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah.”

Punishment for wrongfully taking from zakat funds

(209) bukhari:2597ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī

The Prophet ﷺ appointed a man from al-Azd, called Ibn al-Lutbiyyah, to collect the charity (zakah). When he returned, he said: “This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift.” He said: “Why didn’t he sit in his father’s house or his mother’s house and see whether he would be given gifts or not? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no one takes anything from it except that he will come with it on the Day of Judgement carrying it on his neck: if it is a camel, it will be bellowing; or a cow, it will be mooing; or a sheep, it will be bleating.”

Then he raised his hand until we could see the whiteness of his armpit, and he said: “O Allah, have I conveyed ˹the message˺? O Allah, have I conveyed  ˹the message˺?” three times.

Deeds will be currency of justice for wrongdoing on the Judgement Day

(210) bukhari:2449Ādam b. Abū Iyās > Ibn Abū Dhiʾb > Saʿīd al-Maqburī > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever has wronged someone with regard to his honor or anything else, let him seek his pardon from him today, before there will be no dinar and no dirham. If he has righteous deeds, some will be taken from him in proportion to his wrongdoing; and if he has no good deeds, some of the other person’s bad deeds will be taken and placed upon him.”

Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways said: He was only called “al-Maqburī” because he had settled in the area of the graves. Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Saʿīd al-Maqburī is the freedman of Banū Layth, and he is Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd; and the name of Abū Saʿīd is Kaysān.

A Muslim protects his fellow Muslims from harm

(211) bukhari:10Ādam b. Abū Iyās > Shuʿbah > ʿAbdullāh b. Abū al-Safar And ʾIsmāʿīl > al-Shaʿbī > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a muhajir (emigrant) is the one who abandons all what Allah has forbidden."

Abu ʿAbdullāh said, and Abu Muʿāwiyah said: Dawud narrated to us from ʿĀmir; he said: I heard ʿAbdullāh [narrating] from the Prophet ﷺ. And ʿAbd al-Aʿlā [also narrated] from Dawud, from ʿĀmir, from ʿAbdullāh, from the Prophet ﷺ.

Hellfire is punishment for stealing from the war booty

There was a man in charge of the Prophet’s ﷺ baggage, called Kirkirah, and he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is in the Fire.” So they went to look at him and found a cloak that he had stolen from the booty.

Significance of the sanctity of a Muslim, his property, and his rights

(213) bukhari:4406Muḥammad b. al-Muthanná > ʿAbd al-Wahhāb > Ayyūb > Muḥammad > Ibn Abū Bakrah > Abū Bakrah

from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Indeed, ˹calendar months˺ have returned to its original state, as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive—Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar, which is between the two Jumads and Sha‘ban.”

Then he said: “Which month is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by a another name. He said: “Is it not Dhu al-Hijjah?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which land is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Baldah (Sacred Precinct)?” We said: Yes. He said: “Which day is this?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remained silent until we thought he would name it by another name. He said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said: Yes.

He said: *“Indeed, your blood and your wealth” —Muhammad said, and I think he also said— “and your honor are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. And you will meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. So do not return after me misguided, striking the necks of one another. Let the one who is present convey to the one who is absent, for perhaps some who are informed will comprehend it better than some who heard it.”

Hellfire is the punishment for violating the rights of others

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever takes away the right of a Muslim person by his (false) oath, Allah has made the Fire obligatory for him and has forbidden Paradise to him.” A man said to him: “Even if it is something insignificant, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Even if it is a twig from an arāk tree.”

Stealing as little as a needle will be held against the thief

(215) muslim:1833aAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ > Ismāʿīl b. Abū Khālid > Qays b. Abū Ḥāzim > ʿAdī b. ʿAmīrah al-Kindī

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whomever we appoint from among you to a task, and he conceals from us a needle or anything above that, it is misappropriation, which he will bring with him on the Day of Resurrection.”

He said: Then a black man from the Ansar stood up to him —I can still picture him— and said: O Messenger of Allah, relieve me of your assignment. He said: “What is the matter with you?” He said: I heard you say such and such. He said: “And I say it now: Whomever we appoint from among you to a task, let him bring what is little and what is much; whatever he is given from it, he may take, and whatever he is forbidden from, he must refrain.”

A believer does not steal from the war booty

(216) muslim:114Zuhayr b. Ḥarb > Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār

When it was the day of Khaybar, a group of the Prophet’s Companions came forward and said: “So-and-so is a martyr, so-and-so is a martyr,” until they passed by a man and said: “So-and-so is a martyr.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No indeed. I saw him in the Fire, in a cloak that he had taken unlawfully ˹from the spoils˺, or a mantle.”

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O son of al-Khattab, go and announce among the people: None will enter Paradise except the believers.” He said: So I went out and proclaimed: “Behold, none will enter Paradise except the believers.”

Not paying back debts is wrongdoing

(217) muslim:1885aQutaybah b. Saʿīd > Layth > Saʿīd b. Abū Saʿīd > ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Qatādah > Abū Qatādah > Samiʿah

from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he stood among them and mentioned to them that striving in the path of Allah and believing in Allah are the best of deeds. A man stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I am killed in the path of Allah, will my sins be expiated for me?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Yes, if you are killed in the path of Allah while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating.”

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What did you say?” He said, “What do you think if I am killed in the path of Allah, will my sins be expiated for me?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Yes, while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, except for debt, for Jibril ᴬˢ told me this.”

One with malice will be bankrupt of good deeds on Judgement Day

(218) muslim:2581Qutaybah b. Saʿīd And ʿAlī b. Ḥujr > Ismāʿīl Wahū Ibn Jaʿfar > al-ʿAlāʾ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Do you know who the bankrupt is?" They said: A bankrupt is one who has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He said: "The bankrupt of my Ummah would be the one who would come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasts, and Zakāh while he hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully consumed the wealth of others, shed the blood of others, and beat others. His good deeds would be given to the other ˹who suffered at his hand˺. And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account, then their sins would be taken and thrown toward him and he would be thrown in the Hellfire."

(219) bukhari:7169ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah > Mālik > Hishām from his father > Zaynab Āb.ah Abū Salamah > Um Salamah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I am only a human being, and you bring your disputes to me. Perhaps one of you is more eloquent in presenting his argument than another, so I judge according to what I hear. So whoever I have ruled in his favor for something that is actually his brother’s right should not take it, for I would only be granting him a piece of the Fire.”
