I asked 'Alqama if Ibn Mas'ud was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the Jinn (the night when the Prophet met them). He (Ibn Mas'uad) said: No, but we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and we missed him. We searched for him in the valleys and the hills and said. He has either been taken away (by jinn) or has been secretly killed. He (the narrator) said. We spent the worst night which people could ever spend. When it was dawn we saw him coming from the side of Hiri'. He (the narrator) reported. We said: Messenger of Allah, we missed you and searched for you, but we could not find you and we spent the worst night which people could ever spend. He (the Holy Prophet) said: There came to me an inviter on behalf of the Jinn and I went along with him and recited to them the Qur'an. He (the narrator) said: He then went along with us and showed us their traces and traces of their embers. They (the Jinn) asked him (the Holy Prophet) about their provision and he said: Every bone on which the name of Allah is recited is your provision. The time it will fall in your hand it would be covered with flesh, and the dung of (the camels) is fodder for your animals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Don't perform istinja with these (things) for these are the food of your brothers (Jinn).

"The first person to speak about Al-Qadar was Ma'bad Al-Juhani." He said: "Humaid bin Abdur-Rahman Al-Himyari and I went out until we reached Al-Madinah, and we said: 'If we could only meet someone among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ so we could ask him about what those people have innovated." [He said:] "So we met him - meaning Abdullah bin 'Umar - while he was leaving the Masjid." [He said:] "My companion and I were on either side of him." [He said:] I thought my companion was going to leave the speaking to me so I said: "O Abu Abdur-Rahman! There is a group of people who recite the Qur'an and seek knowledge, and they claim there is no Al-Qadar, and that the affair is left to chance.' He said: "Whenever you meet those people, then tell them that I am not of them and they are not of me. By the One Whom Abdullah swears by! If one of them were to spend gold the like of Uhud (mountain) in charity, it would not be accepted from him until he believes in Al-Qadar; the good of it and the bad of it.'" He said: "Then he began to narrate, he said: "'Umar bin Al-Khattab said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah when a man came with extremely white garments, and extremely black hair. He had no appearance of traveling visible on him, yet none of us recognized him. He came until he reached the Prophet ﷺ. He put his knees up against his knees, and then said: "O Muhammad! What is Iman?' He said 'To believe in Allah, His Angels, His, Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement, and Al-Qadar, the good of it and the bad of it.' He said: 'Then what is Islam?' He said: 'Testifying to La Ilaha Illallah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, establishing the Salat, giving the Zakat, performing Hajj to the House, and fasting (the month of) Ramadan.' He said: 'Then what is Ihsan?' He said 'That (is) you worship Allah as if you see Him, and although you do not see Him, He certainly sees you.' He said: 'For all of those he replied to him: 'You have told the truth.'" He said: "So we were amazed at him, he would ask, and then tell him that he is telling the truth. He said: 'Then when is the Hour?' He ﷺ said: 'The one being asked knows no more than the questioner.' He said: 'Then what are its signs?' He said: 'That the slave woman gives birth to her master, and that the naked, poor, and bare-footed shepherds rival each other in the height of the buildings.'" 'Umar said: 'Then the Prophet ﷺ met me three days after that and said: 'O 'Umar! Do you know who the questioner was? It was Jibril. He came to teach you about the matters of your religion.'"

(Using translation from Muslim 450a)

[AI] I asked Alqamah, "Was Ibn Masood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Night of the Jinn?" Alqamah said, "I asked Ibn Masood and said, 'Did anyone of you witness the Night of the Jinn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said, 'No, but we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a certain night, and we lost him. So we searched for him in the valleys and mountains, and we said, 'He was taken away or killed.' So we spent the night fearing that some people had captured him. When morning came, he appeared to us from the direction of Hira and said, 'We lost you and searched for you but did not find you, so I spent the night with some people.' He said, 'A caller from among the jinn came to me and I went with him, and I recited the Quran to them.' He then took us to see their tracks and the marks of their fires, and they asked him for provisions. He said, 'Every bone that mentions the name of Allah upon it will be enough for you as meat, and every dung will be enough for your animals.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not relieve yourselves with those two things, for they are the food of your brothers.'"

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled for confiscation from the killer? He said, "Yes, but I increased it." I said, "You should return it to him or I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it." He said, "We will not return it to him." I said, "Fine." So we gathered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I narrated to him the story of Madadi and what Khalid did. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Khalid, what prompted you to do what you did?" Khalid said, "O Messenger of Allah, I increased it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Khalid, return to him what you took from him." Awf said, "I said to you, O Khalid, did I not warn you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What happened?" So I informed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, "O Khalid, do not return it to him. Are you leaving my commanders for you, the elite of their affairs, while they face difficulties?"

[AI] He was asked while on the pulpit about a man who divorced his wife three times, then someone else married her, closed the door, removed the veil, and revealed her face, then divorced her. He said, "She is not permissible for the first man until the other man tastes her honey." This is the wording of the Hadith of Al-'Abdiyy. Al-'Abdiyy also said it in his narration, as did Abu Ahmad Al-Zubayri. The authentic narration is from 'Abd Al-Rahman bin Mahdi, and it was narrated by Waki' once from Sufyan, who narrated from 'Alqamah, from Razeen bin Sulaiman Al-Ahmarri. He was contradicted by Shu'bah in his chain of narrators, so he narrated it from 'Alqamah bin Marthad, from Salim bin Razeen, from Salim bin 'Abdullah, from Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib, from Ibn 'Umar. The Prophet informed us of this and it was narrated by Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Al-Hasan. They said, "Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub informed us, Muhammad bin Ishaq informed me, and I am the successor of Yahya bin Ma'in." They said, "Ghandar informed us, Shu'bah mentioned it to us, and I received it from Muhammad bin Isma'il Al-Bukhari that he weakened the Hadith of Shu'bah and Sufyan together. And Abi Zar'ah said that the Hadith of Sufyan is the most authentic."
