Have you said the afternoon prayer? We said to him: It is just a few minutes before that we finished the noon prayer. He said: Offer the afternoon prayer. So we stood up and said our prayer. And when we completed it, he said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: This is how the hypocrite prays: he sits watching the sun, and when it is between the horns of devil, he rises and strikes the ground four times (in haste) mentioning Allah a little during it.

أَصَلَّيْتُمُ الْعَصْرَ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ إِنَّمَا انْصَرَفْنَا السَّاعَةَ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ قَالَ فَصَلُّوا الْعَصْرَ فَقُمْنَا فَصَلَّيْنَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفْنَا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ يَجْلِسُ يَرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَهَا أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

We came upon Anas b. Malik after the Zuhr prayer. He stood for saying the 'Asr prayer. When he became free from praying, we mentioned to him about observing prayer in its early period or he himself mentioned it. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: This is how hypocrites pray, this is how hypocrites pray, this is how hypocrites pray: He sits (watching the sun), and when it becomes yellow and is between the horns of the devil, or is on the horns of the devil, he rises and prays for rak'ahs quickly, remembering Allah only seldom during them.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يَجْلِسُ أَحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا اصْفَرَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَكَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىْ شَيْطَانٍ أَوْ عَلَى قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

he visited Anas bin Malik in his home in Al Basrah after finishing Zuhr, and his home was next to the Masjid. So he said: 'Stand to pray Asr." He (Al-Ala) said: "So we stood to pray. When we were finished he (Anas) said: 'I heard Messenger of Allah saying: "That is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun, until when it is between the horns of the Shaitan he stands and pecks out four (units of prayer), not remembering Allah in them but a little."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ يَجْلِسُ يَرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

'Have you prayed 'Asr?' We said: 'No, we have just finished Zuhr.' He said: 'Pray 'Asr.' So we got up and prayed, and when we finished he said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "That is the prayer of the hypocrite: he sits and delays 'Asr prayer until (the sun) is between the horns of the Shaitan, then he gets up and pecks four (Rak'ahs) in which he only remembers Allah a little.'"

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "That is the prayer of the hypocrite - he leaves the prayer until it is in the horns of Satan, or between the horns of Satan, and he prays in it, not mentioning Allah in it except a little."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ الْمُنَافِقِ يَدَعُ الْعَصْرَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ أَوْ عَلَى قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَهَا نَقَرَاتِ الدِّيكِ لَا يَذْكُرُ اللهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

Yahya related to me from Malik that al-Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman said, "We visited Anas ibn Malik after dhuhr and he stood up and prayed asr. When he had finished his prayer, we mentioned doing prayers early in their time, or he mentioned it, and he said that he had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, the prayer of the hypocrites, the prayer of the hypocrites, the prayer of the hypocrites is that one of them sits until the sun becomes yellow and is between the horns of Shaytan, or on the horn of Shaytan, and then gets up and rattles off four rakas, hardly remembering Allah in them at all.' "

فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يَجْلِسُ أَحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا اصْفَرَّتِ الشَّمْسُ وَكَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ أَوْ عَلَى قَرْنِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً

[AI] Falasi yatumā fī al-ḥujra fafaraghna waṭawwala huwa thumma insarafa ilaynā fakāna awwala mā kallamana bihi an qāla qāla rasūlullāh ﷺ "tilka ṣalātu al-munāfiqīna yumhilu aḥaduhum ḥattā iḍā kānat al-shamsu 'alā qarneyi al-shayṭān qaama fanaqara arba'an lā yaẓkuru Allāha fīhā illā qalīlā".

فَصَلِّيَا عِنْدَكُمَا فِي الْحُجْرَةِ فَفَرَغْنَا وَطَوَّلَ هُوَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَيْنَا فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا كَلَّمَنَا بِهِ أَنْ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُمْهِلُ أَحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لَا يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا»

حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ ذَكَرْنَا تَعْجِيلَ الصَّلَاةِ أَوْ ذَكَرَهَا فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ يَجْلِسُ أَحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا اصْفَرَّتِ الشَّمْسُ وَكَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ أَوْ عَلَى قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا»

[AI] "Fasalliya 'indana fil-hujrati fafaraghna wa tawwala huwa wansarafa ilayna, fakana awalama kallamana bihi an qala innarasulullahi salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam qala "Tilka salatu al-munafiqein, yaq'udu ahaduhum hatta izakanta 'ala qarni ash-shaytani aw bayna qarnayi ash-shaytani qama fanakra arba'an, la yadhkuru Allah fiha illa qaleela."

In English, it translates to: "He prayed with us in the room, then he finished and lengthened his stay, and finally he turned towards us. The first thing he said to us was that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'That is the prayer of the hypocrites. One of them sits until it is almost time for the prayer to end, then he quickly stands up and makes four quick rak'ahs, in which he hardly remembers Allah.'"

فَصَلِّيَا عِنْدَنَا فِي الْحُجْرَةِ فَفَرَغْنَا وَطَوَّلَ هُوَ وَانْصَرَفَ إِلَيْنَا فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا كَلَّمَنَا بِهِ أَنْ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يَقْعُدُ أَحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ عَلَى قَرْنِ الشَّيْطَانِ أَوْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لَا يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا»

قَالَ رَسُول اللهِ ﷺ صَلاةُ الْمُنَافِقِ يَجْلِسُ يَنْتَظِرُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا اصْفَرَّتْ وَكَانَتْ عَلَى قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ أَوْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لا يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ إلاَّ قليلا

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "That is the prayer of the hypocrite, he sits watching the sun until it is between the horns of the devil, then he stands and performs four (rak'ahs) without mentioning Allah except a little. This is the wording of the hadith of Abu al-Rabi'."

"تِلْكَ صَلاةُ المنافقينَ، يَجْلِسُ يرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَى الشَّيْطَان قام فَنَقَرَهَا أرْبَعًا، لا يَذْكُر اللَّه فيها إِلَّا قَلِيْلًا".

"عَنِ العلاءِ بنِ عبدِ الرحمنِ قَالَ: دَخَلنَا عَلَى أنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ فَقَامَ يُصَلى العَصْرَ، فَلَما فَرغَ ذَكرْنَا تَعْجِيلَ الصَّلاَةِ، أوْ ذَكَرَهَا، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: تِلكَ صَلاَةُ المُنَافِقِينَ ثَلاَثَ مَرأَتِ يَجْلِسُ أحَدُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا اصْفَرَّتِ الشَّمْسُ وَكانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ، أوْ عَلَى قَرْنِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ يَنْقُرُ أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكرُ الله فِيهَا إِلا قَلِيلًا".
