While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet ﷺ was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied, "This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of ʿAbdul Muttalib." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am here to answer your questions." The man said to the Prophet, "I want to ask you something and will be hard in questioning. So do not get angry." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ask whatever you want." The man said, "I ask you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who were before you, has Allah sent you as an Apostle to all the mankind?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "By Allah, yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to offer five prayers in a day and night (24 hours).? He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah! Has Allah ordered you to observe fasts during this month of the year (i.e. Ramadan)?" He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to take Zakat (obligatory charity) from our rich people and distribute it amongst our poor people?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "By Allah, yes." Thereupon that man said, "I have believed in all that with which you have been sent, and I have been sent by my people as a messenger, and I am Dimam bin Thaʿlaba from the brothers of Bani Saʿd bin Bakr."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى جَمَلٍ فَأَنَاخَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ عَقَلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ فَقُلْنَا هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشَدِّدٌ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلاَ تَجِدْ عَلَىَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَقَالَ سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ فَقَالَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِاللَّهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِاللَّهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِاللَّهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ رَوَاهُ مُوسَى وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِهَذَا

"While we were sitting in the Masjid, a man came on a camel and made it keneel in the Masjid, then he hobbled it and said to them: 'Which of you is Muhammad?' The Messenger of Allah was reclining amid his Companions, and we said to him: This white man who is reclining.' The man said to him: 'O son of 'Abdul-Muttalib.' The Messenger of Allah said: ' I have answered you.' The man said; 'O Muhammad, I am going to ask you questions, and I will be harsh in asking; do not get upset.; The man said: 'I adjure you by your Lord and the Lord of those who cam before you, has Allah sent you to all the people?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said; 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to offer five prayers each day and night?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'By Allah, yes.; He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month each year? The Messenger of Allah said: 'By Allah, Yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and distribute it among our poor?' The Messenger of Allah said. 'By Allah, yes.' The man said: 'I believe in that which you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are coming after me. I am Dimam bin Thalabah, the brother of Banu sad bin Bakr."' Yaqub bin Ibrahim contradicted him.

لَهُمْ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ قُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَمُشَدِّدٌ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلاَ تَجِدَنَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ قَالَ سَلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ نَشَدْتُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ خَالَفَهُ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

"while we were with the Messenger of Allah, sitting in the Masjid, a man entered on a camel. He made it kneel in the Masjid, then he hobbled it. Then he said; 'Which of you is Muhammad?' He was reclining among them, and we said to him: 'This white man who is reclining.' The man said to him: 'O son of 'Abdul-Muttalib.' The Messenger of Allah said to him: 'I have answered you.' The man said: 'O Muhammad, I am going to ask you questions and I will be harsh in asking.' He said; 'Ask whatever you like.' The man said; 'I adjure you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who came begfore you, has Allah sent you to all the people?' The messenger of Allah said: 'by Allah, yes,' He said: 'Iadjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month each year?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and divide it among our poor?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'By Allah, Yes.' The ma said; 'I believe in that which you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are coming after me. I am Dimam bin Thalabah, the brother of Banu sad bin Bakr."' (Sahih) 'Ubaidullah bin 'Umar contradicted him.

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ جُلُوسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى جَمَلٍ فَأَنَاخَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ عَقَلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشَدِّدٌ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ قَالَ سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ خَالَفَهُ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ

"While the Prophet was with his Companions a man from among the desert people came and said: 'Which of you is the son of 'Abdul-Muttalib?' They said: 'This Anghar man who is reclining on a pillow.' (One of the narrators) Hamzah said: "Amghar means white with a reddish complexion.'- The man said: 'I am going to ask you questions and I will be harsh in asking.' He said: 'ask whatever you like.' He said: 'I ask you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, and the Lord of those who will come after you; has Allah sent you?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to offer five prayers each day and night?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.; He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to take from the wealth of our rich and give it to our poor?' he said: 'By Allah, yes He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month out of the twelve months?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to go on pilgrimage to this House, where can afford it?' He said: 'By Allah yes.' He said: 'I belive, and I am Dimam bin Thalabah."'

بَيْنَمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ قَالَ أَيُّكُمُ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالُوا هَذَا الأَمْغَرُ الْمُرْتَفِقُ قَالَ حَمْزَةُ الأَمْغَرُ الأَبْيَضُ مُشْرَبٌ حُمْرَةً فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ قَالَ سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ قَالَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ بَعْدَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْ أَمْوَالِ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَرُدَّهُ عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ اثْنَىْ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ يَحُجَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنِّي آمَنْتُ وَصَدَّقْتُ وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ

“While we were sitting in the mosque, a man entered riding a camel; he made it kneel in the mosque, then he hobbled it and said to them: ‘Which of you is Muhammad?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reclining among them, so they said: ‘This fair- skinned man who is reclining.’ The man said to him: ‘O son of ‘Abdul- Muttalib!’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘I am listening to you.’ The man said: O Muhammad! I am asking you and will be stern in asking, so do not bear any ill-feelings towards me.’ He said: ‘Ask whatever you think.’ The man said: ‘I adjure you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, has Allah sent you to all of mankind?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.; He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to pray the five prayers each day and night?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month of each year?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and distribute it among our poor?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ The man said: ‘I believe in what you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are behind me. I am Dimam bin Tha’labah, the brother of Banu Sa’d bin Bakr.’”

I am asking you and will be stern in asking, so do not bear any ill-feelings towards me.’ He said: ‘Ask whatever you think.’ The man said: ‘I adjure you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, has Allah sent you to all of mankind?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.; He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to pray the five prayers each day and night?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month of each year?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and distribute it among our poor?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ The man said: ‘I believe in what you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are behind me. I am Dimam bin Tha’labah, the brother of Banu Sa’d bin Bakr.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1402)

لَهُمْ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الْأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلَا تَجِدَنَّ عَلَيَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «سَلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ نَشَدْتُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنَ نَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ

[AI] The Banu Saad ibn Bakr sent Dimam ibn Tha'laba to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he came to him and tied his camel at the gate of the mosque. Then he entered the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in the mosque. Dimam was a man with curly hair and had two braids until he stood in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. He said, "Which one of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." He said, "Are you Muhammad?" He said, "Yes." He said, "O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I ask you and I am persistent in my questioning, so you will not find in yourself, so ask about what is apparent to you." So he said, "I do not find in myself, so ask about what is apparent to you." He said, "I adjure you by Allah, your God, and the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you. Allah has commanded you to order us to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him, and to remove these idols that our fathers used to worship besides Him." He said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "I adjure you by Allah, your God, and the God of those before you, and the God of those who will come after you. Allah has commanded you to order us to pray these five daily prayers." He said, "O Allah, yes." Then he began to mention the obligations of Islam one by one, the obligatory acts of charity, fasting, pilgrimage, and all the laws of Islam, and he would adjure him after each obligation, just as he had done before it, until he finished. Then he said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I will fulfill these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me. I will not exceed them or diminish them." Then he turned to his camel and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If he spoke the truth about the two braids, he will enter Paradise."

بَعَثَتْ بَنُو سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ ضِمَامَ بْنَ ثَعْلَبَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَنَاخَ بَعِيرَهُ عَلَى بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ عَقَلَهُ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ ضِمَامٌ رَجُلًا جَلْدَ الشَّعْرِ ذَا غَدِيرَتَيْنِ حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَنَا ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ» قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ وَمُغَلِّظٌ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلَا تَجِدَنَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَقَالَ «لَا أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي فَاسْأَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ» فَقَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِاللهِ إِلَهِكَ وَإِلَهِ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكَ وَإِلَهِ مَنْ هُوَ كَائِنٌ بَعْدَكَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْمُرَنَا أَنْ نعْبُدَ اللهَ لَا نُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَنْ نَخْلَعَ هَذِهِ الْأَنْدَادَ الَّتِي كَانَتْ يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُنَا مِنْ دُونِهِ؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِاللهِ إِلَهِكَ وَإِلَهِ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكَ وَإِلَهِ مَنْ هُوَ كَائِنٌ بَعْدَكَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْمُرَنَا أَنْ نصَلِّيَ هَذِهِ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ؟ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَذْكُرُ فَرَائِضَ الْإِسْلَامِ فَرِيضَةً فَرِيضَةً الزَّكَاةَ وَالصِّيَامَ الْحَجَّ وَشَرَائِعَ الْإِسْلَامِ كُلُّهَا يُنَاشِدُهُ عِنْدَ كُلِّ فَرِيضَةٍ كَمَا نَاشَدَهُ فِي الَّتِيِ قَبْلَهَا حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَسَأُؤَدِّي هَذِهِ الْفَرَائِضَ وَأَجْتَنِبُ مَا نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ لَا أَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَا أَنْقُصُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَى بَعِيرِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنْ صَدَقَ ذُو الْغَدِيرَتَيْنِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

“While we were sitting in the mosque, a man entered riding a camel; he made it kneel in the mosque, then he hobbled it and said to them: ‘Which of you is Muhammad?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reclining among them, so they said: ‘This fair- skinned man who is reclining.’ The man said to him: ‘O son of ‘Abdul- Muttalib!’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘I am listening to you.’ The man said: O Muhammad! I am asking you and will be stern in asking, so do not bear any ill-feelings towards me.’ He said: ‘Ask whatever you think.’ The man said: ‘I adjure you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, has Allah sent you to all of mankind?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.; He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to pray the five prayers each day and night?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month of each year?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ He said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and distribute it among our poor?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘By Allah, yes.’ The man said: ‘I believe in what you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are behind me. لَهُمْ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ قُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الْأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ إِنِّي يَا مُحَمَّدُ سَائِلُكَ فَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلَا تَجِدَنَّ عَلَيَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَقَالَ «سَلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ نَشَدْتُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ اللهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ بِاللهِ اللهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالَفَهُ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ

"while we were with the Messenger of Allah, sitting in the Masjid, a man entered on a camel. He made it kneel in the Masjid, then he hobbled it. Then he said; 'Which of you is Muhammad?' He was reclining among them, and we said to him: 'This white man who is reclining.' The man said to him: 'O son of 'Abdul-Muttalib.' The Messenger of Allah said to him: 'I have answered you.' The man said: 'O Muhammad, I am going to ask you questions and I will be harsh in asking.' He said; 'Ask whatever you like.' The man said; 'I adjure you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who came begfore you, has Allah sent you to all the people?' The messenger of Allah said: 'by Allah, yes,' He said: 'Iadjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month each year?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and divide it among our poor?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'By Allah, Yes.' The ma said; 'I believe in that which you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are coming after me. I am Dimam bin Thalabah, the brother of Banu sad bin Bakr."' أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى جَمَلٍ فَأَنَاخَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ عَقَلَهُ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَيْهِمْ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الْأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ وَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَقَالَ سَلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهُمْ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنَ السَّنَةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ اللهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَقْسِمَهَا عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالَفَهُ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ

"While the Prophet was with his Companions a man from among the desert people came and said: 'Which of you is the son of 'Abdul-Muttalib?' They said: 'This Anghar man who is reclining on a pillow.' (One of the narrators) Hamzah said: "Amghar means white with a reddish complexion.'- The man said: 'I am going to ask you questions and I will be harsh in asking.' He said: 'ask whatever you like.' He said: 'I ask you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, and the Lord of those who will come after you; has Allah sent you?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to offer five prayers each day and night?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.; He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to take from the wealth of our rich and give it to our poor?' he said: 'By Allah, yes He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month out of the twelve months?' He said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Him, has Allah commanded you to go on pilgrimage to this House, where can afford it?' He said: 'By Allah yes.' He said: 'I belive, and I am Dimam bin Thalabah."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2094)

بَيْنَمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ جَاءَهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمُ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا الْأَمْغَرُ الْمُرْتَفِقُ قَالَ حَمْزَةُ الْأَمْغَرُ الْأَبْيَضُ مُشْرَبُ حُمْرَةً قَالَ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ قَالَ «سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ» قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ بَعْدَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْ أَمْوَالِ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتَرُدَّهُ عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نَصُومَ هَذَا الشَّهْرَ مِنْ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ وَأَنْشُدُكَ بِهِ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ نَحُجَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا؟ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» قَالَ فَإِنِّي آمَنْتُ وَصَدَّقْتُ وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ

While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet ﷺ was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied, "This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of ʿAbdul Muttalib." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am here to answer your questions." The man said to the Prophet, "I want to ask you something and will be hard in questioning. So do not get angry." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ask whatever you want." The man said, "I ask you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who were before you, has Allah sent you as an Apostle to all the mankind?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "By Allah, yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to offer five prayers in a day and night (24 hours).? He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah! Has Allah ordered you to observe fasts during this month of the year (i.e. Ramadan)?" He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah. Has Allah ordered you to take Zakat (obligatory charity) from our rich people and distribute it amongst our poor people?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "By Allah, yes." Thereupon that man said, "I have believed in all that with which you have been sent, and I have been sent by my people as a messenger, and I am Dimam bin Thaʿlaba from the brothers of Bani Saʿd bin Bakr." أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ؓ يَقُولُ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جُلُوسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ إِذْ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى جَمَلٍ فَأَنَاخَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ عَقَلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْهِمْ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ الْأَبْيَضُ الْمُتَّكِئُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ يَا ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَجَبْتُكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي سَائِلُكَ فَمُشْتَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَلَا تَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَقَالَ سَلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ نَشَدْتُكَ بِرَبِّكَ وَرَبِّ مَنْ قَبْلَكَ آللَّهُ أَرْسَلَكَ إِلَى النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ؟ فَقَالَ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ بِصَوْمِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ مِنَ السَّنَةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِنَا فَتُقْسَمَ عَلَى فُقَرَائِنَا؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ قَالَ الرَّجُلُ آمَنْتُ بِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنْ قَوْمِي وَأَنَا ضِمَامُ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ أَخُو بَنِي سَعْدِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ

"عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيم: أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ أَبْوَالِ الإِبِلِ، فَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنِى سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ عن الْمُحَارِبينَ قَالَ: كَانَ أُنَاسٌ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا: نُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى الإِسْلَامِ فَبَايَعُوهُ [وَهُمْ] كَذَبَةٌ وَلَيْسَ الإِسْلَام يُريدُونَ، ثُمَّ قَالُوا: إِنَّا نَجْتوى الْمَدِينَة فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ هَذِهِ اللِّقَاحُ تَغْدُو عَلَيْكُمْ وَتَرُوحُ، فَاشْرَبُوا مِنْ أَلْبَانِهَا وَأَبْوَالِهَا، فَبَينَما هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ جَاءَ الصَّرِيخُ يَصْرُخُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّه ﷺ فَقَالَ: قَتَلُوا الرَّاعِى وَسَاقُوا النَّعَمَ، فَأَمَرَ

رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنُودِى في النَّاسِ أَنْ يَا خَيْلَ اللَّهِ ارْكبِى، فَرَكِبُوا لا يَنْتَظِرُ فَارِسٌ فَارِسًا وَرَكب رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ في إثْرِهِمْ، فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا يَطْلُبُونَهُمْ حَتَّى أَدْخَلُوهُمْ مَأمَنَهُمْ، فَرَجَعَ صَحَابَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ [أَسَرُوا] مِنْهُمْ، فَأَتَوْا بِهِمْ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ -تَعَالَى- {إِنَّمَا جَزَاءُ الَّذِينَ يُحَارِبُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ} الآيَة قَالَ: فَكَانَ نَفْيُهُمْ أَنْ [نَفَوْهُمْ] حَتَّى أَدْخَلُوهُمْ [مأمَنَهُمْ] وَأَرْضَهُمْ وَنَفَوهُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَقَتَلَ نَبِىُّ اللَّه ﷺ مِنْهُمْ وَصَلَّبَ وَقَطَّعَ وَسَمَلَ الأَعْيُنَ، قَالَ: فَمَا مَثَّلَ نَبِىُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَبْلُ وَلَا بَعْدُ قَالَ: وَنَهَى عَنِ الْمُثْلَةِ وَقَالَ: لَا تُمثِّلُوا بِشَىْءٍ قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَحْرقَهُمْ بِالنَّارِ بَعْدَ مَا قَتَلَهُمْ، قَالَ: وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَقُولُ: هُمْ نَاسٌ مِنْ بَنِى سُلَيْمٍ، وَمِنْهُمْ مِنْ عُرَيْنَةَ نَاس مِنْ بَجِيلَةَ".

"عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ: هَجَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالْمُسْلِمينَ ثَلَاثَة رَهْطٍ مِنَ الْمُشْركِينَ: عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرى، وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ المطَّلبِ، فَقَالَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَلَا تَأمُرُ عَلِيّا أَنْ يَهْجُوَ عَنَّا هؤُلاءِ الْقَوْم؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ : لَيْسَ عَلِىٌّ هُنَالِكَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ (إِذَا القَوْمُ نَصَرُوا نَبِى اللَّهِ بِأَيْدِيهمْ، وَأَسْلِحَتِهِمْ فَبِألْسِنَتهم أَحَقُّ أَنْ يَنْصُرُوهُ، فَقَالَت الأَنْصَارُ: (أرَادَنَا) فَأَتَوْا حَسَانَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لهُ، فَأقْبَلَ يَمْشِى حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! وَالَّذِى بَعَثَكَ بالحَقِّ، مَا أُحِبُ أَنَّ لِى بمقْوَلى مَا بَيْنَ صَنْعَاءَ وَبُصْرَى، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْتَ لَهَا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنِّى لَا عِلْمَ لِى بِقُرَيْشٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَبِى بَكْر: فَأخْبِرْهُ (عَنْهُمْ) [ونقب لَهُ فِى مثالبهم] () فَهَجاهُمْ حَسَّانُ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ وَكَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَقَالَ ابْنُ سيرين: أُنْبِئْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَا هو يَسِيرُ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ، وَشَنَقَهَا بِزمامِهَا حَتَّى وَضَعَتْ رَأسَهَا عِنْدَ قَادِمَةِ الرَّحْلِ، فَقَالَ: أَيْنَ كَعْبٌ؟ فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ: [هأنذا] ( ) يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: خُذْ وَفِى لَفْظٍ قَالَ: أَنْشِدْ فَقَالَ:

قَضَيْنَا مِنْ تِهَامَة كُلَّ رَيْبٍ ... وَخَيْبَرَ ثُمَّ [أَجْمَعْنَا] ( * *) السُّيُوفَا

تُخبِّرُها وَلَوْ نَطَقَتْ لَقَالَتْ ... قَوَاطِعُهُنَّ: دَوْسًا أَوْ ثِقِيفًا

قَالَ: فَأَنْشَدَ الْكَلِمَةَ كُلَّهَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّه ﷺ وَالَّذِى نَفْس مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدهِ لَهِى أَشَدُّ عَلَيْهِم مِنْ رشق النَّبْلِ" قال ابن سيرين: فَنُبِّئْتُ أن دوسًا إنما أسلمت بكلمة كعب هذه.
