The Prophet ﷺ said, "None spoke in cradle but three: (The first was) Jesus, (the second was), there a man from Bani Israel called Juraij. While he was offering his prayers, his mother came and called him. He said (to himself), 'Shall I answer her or keep on praying?" (He went on praying) and did not answer her, his mother said, "O Allah! Do not let him die till he sees the faces of prostitutes." So while he was in his hermitage, a lady came and sought to seduce him, but he refused. So she went to a shepherd and presented herself to him to commit illegal sexual intercourse with her and then later she gave birth to a child and claimed that it belonged to Juraij. The people, therefore, came to him and dismantled his hermitage and expelled him out of it and abused him. Juraij performed the ablution and offered prayer, and then came to the child and said, 'O child! Who is your father?' The child replied, 'The shepherd.' (After hearing this) the people said, 'We shall rebuild your hermitage of gold,' but he said, 'No, of nothing but mud.'

(The third was the hero of the following story) A lady from Bani Israel was nursing her child at her breast when a handsome rider passed by her. She said, 'O Allah ! Make my child like him.' On that the child left her breast, and facing the rider said, 'O Allah! Do not make me like him.' The child then started to suck her breast again. (Abu Huraira further said, "As if I were now looking at the Prophet ﷺ sucking his finger (in way of demonstration.") After a while the people passed by, with a lady slave and she (i.e. the child's mother) said, 'O Allah! Do not make my child like this (slave girl)!, On that the child left her breast and said, 'O Allah! Make me like her.' When she asked why, the child replied, 'The rider is one of the tyrants while this slave girl is falsely accused of theft and illegal sexual intercourse."

A mother's dua for her child is accepted; Story of Jurayj and the baby that spoke in defense of his innocence

adab:33ʿAyyāsh b. al-Walīd > ʿAbd al-Aʿlā > Muḥammad b. Isḥāq > Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Quṣayṭ > Muḥammad b. Shuraḥbīl > Abū Hurayrah

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No newborn has spoken in the cradle except Jesus, the son of Mary ﷺ, and the companion of Jurayj." It was asked, "O Prophet of Allah, and who is the companion of Jurayj?" He said, "Jurayj was a monk who used to worship in his hermitage. A cattle shepherd would take refuge under his hermitage, and there was a woman from the village who frequently visited the shepherd. One day, Jurayj's mother came and called out, 'O Jurayj!' while he was praying. He thought to himself as he was praying: 'My mother or my prayer?' He decided to prefer his prayer. She called out to him a second time, and he thought to himself: 'My mother or my prayer?' He decided to prefer his prayer. She called out to him a third time, and he again thought: 'My mother or my prayer?' and he decided to prefer his prayer. When he did not respond to her, she said, 'May Allah not let you die, Jurayj, until you have looked in the faces of the wicked women.' Then she left.

Later, the king was presented with that woman who had given birth. He asked, 'Whose child is this?' She said, 'Jurayj’s.' The king asked, 'The companion of the hermitage?' She replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'Destroy his hermitage and bring him to me!' So they destroyed his hermitage with axes until it collapsed. They tied his hands to his neck with a rope and brought him. He was taken past the wicked women, and he saw them and smiled while they were looking at him among the people. The king asked him, 'What does she claim?' Jurayj asked, 'What does she claim?' The king answered, 'She claims that her child is yours.' Jurayj asked her, 'Do you claim this?' She replied, 'Yes.' He asked, 'Where is the child?' They said, 'He is in her arms.' Jurayj turned to him and asked, 'Who is your father?' The baby responded, 'The cattle shepherd.'

The king then asked, 'Shall we make your hermitage out of gold?' Jurayj replied, 'No.' The king asked, 'Out of silver?' Jurayj replied, 'No.' The king asked, 'Then what shall we make it from?' Jurayj replied, 'Return it as it was.' The king asked, 'Why did you smile?' Jurayj said, 'Something I understood: my mother's supplication reached me,' and then he explained to them."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There was an Israeli man called Juraij, while he was praying, his mother came and called him, but he did not respond to her call. He said (to himself) whether he should continue the prayer or reply to his mother. She came to him the second time and called him and said, "O Allah! A woman said that she would entice Juraij, so she went to him and presented herself (for an evil act) but he refused. She then went to a shepherd and allowed him to commit an illegal sexual intercourse with her and later she gave birth to a boy. She alleged that the baby was from Juraij. The people went to Juraij and broke down his hermitage, pulled him out of it and abused him. He performed ablution and offered the prayer, then he went to the male (baby) and asked him; "O boy! Who is your father?" The baby replied that his father was the shepherd. The people said that they would build for him a hermitage of gold but Juraij asked them to make it of mud only."

Story of Jurayj and the baby that spoke in defense of his innocence

muslim:2550aShaybān b. Farrūkh > Sulaymān b. al-Mughīrah > Ḥumayd b. Hilāl > Abū Rāfiʿ > Abū Hurayrah

Juraij, it is your mother, so talk to her. She found him at that time absorbed in prayer, so he said (to himself): O Lord, my mother (is calling me) (whereas I am absorbed) in my prayer. He opted for prayer. She (his mother) went back, then came again for the second time and said: O Juraij, it is your mother (calling you), so talk to me. He said: O Allah. there is my mother also and my prayer, and he opted for prayer. She said: O Allah, this Juraij is my son. I pray to talk to him but he refuses to talk to me. O Allah, don't bring death to him unless he has seen the prostitutes, and had she invoked the curse upon him (from the heart of her heart) he would have been involved in some turmoil. There was a shepherd living near by his temple (the temple where Juraij was engaged in prayer). It so happened that a woman of that village came there and that shepherd committed fornication with her and she became pregnant and gave birth to a child. It was said to her: Whose child is this? She said: He is the child of one who is living in this temple. So there came persons with hatchets and spades. They called Juraij. He was absorbed in prayer and he did not talk to them and they were about to demolish that temple that he saw them and then came to them and they said: Ask her (this woman) what she says. He smiled and then touched the head of the child and said: Who is your father? He (the child) said: My father is the shepherd of the sheep, and when they heard this, they said: We are prepared to rebuild with gold and silver what we have demolished from your temple. He said: No, rebuild it with clay as it had been before. He then went up (to his room and absorbed himself in prayer).

None spoke in the cradle but only three (persons), Christ son of Mary, the second one the companion of Juraij. Juraij had got constructed a temple and confined himself in that. His mother came to him as he was busy in prayer and she said: Juraij. He said: My Lord, my mother (is calling me while I am engaged in) my prayer. He continued with the prayer. She returned and she came on the next day and he was busy in prayer, and she said: Juraij. And he said: My Lord, my mother (is calling me while I am engaged) in prayer, and he continued with the prayer and she went back, and then on the next day she again came and he was busy in prayer and she said: Juraij. And he said: My Lord, my mother (is calling me while I am engaged in my prayer, and he continued with the prayer, and she said: My Lord, don't give him death unless he has seen the fate of the prostitutes. The story of Juraij and that of his meditation and prayer gained currency amongst Bani Isra'il. There was a prostitute who had been a beauty incarnate. She said (to the people): If you like I can allure him to evil. She presented herself to him but he paid no heed (to her). She came to a shepherd who lived near the temple and she offered herself to him and he had a sexual intercourse with her and so she became pregnant arid when she gave birth to a child she said: This is from Juraij. So they came and asked him to get down and demolished the temple and began to beat him. He said: What is the matter? They said: You have committed fornication with this prostitute and she has given birth to a child from your loins. He said: Where is the child? They brought him (the child) and he said: just leave me so that I should observe prayer. And he observed prayer and when he finished, he came to the child. He struck his stomach and said: O boy, who is your father? lie said: He is such shepherd. So they turned towards Juraij, kissed him and touched him (for seeking blessing) and said: We are prepared to construct your temple with gold. He said. No, just rebuild it with mud as it had been, and they did that.

Then there was a babe who was sucking his mother that a person dressed in fine garment came riding upon a beast. His mother said: O Allah, make my child like this one. He (the babe) left sucking and began to see towards him, and said: O Allah, don't make me like him. He then returned to the chest and began to suck the milk of his mother. He (Abu Huraira) said: I perceived as if I am seeing Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he is explaining the scene of his sucking milk with his forefinger in his mouth and sucking that. He (Abu Huraira) further reported Allah's Apostle (may be peace upon him) as saying: There happened to pass by him a girl who was being beaten and they were saying: You have committed adultery and you have committed theft and she was saying: Allah is enough for me and He is my good Protector, and his mother said: O Allah, don't make my child like her and he left sucking the milk, and looked towards her and said: O Allah, make me like her, and there was a talk between them. She said: O with shaven head, a good-looking person happened to pass by and I said: O Allah, make my child like him, and you said: O Allah, don't make me like him, and they passed by a girl while they were beating her and saying: You committed fornication and you committed theft, and I said: O Allah, don't make my child like her, and you said: O Allah, make me like her. Thereupon he said: That person was a tyrant, and I said: O Allah, don't make me like him, and they were saying about her: You committed fornication whereas in fact she had not committed that and they were saying: You have committed theft whereas she had not committed theft, so I said: O Allah, make me like her.

ahmad:8071And Hb b. Jarīr from my father > Muḥammad b. Sīrīn > Abū Hurayrah

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Only three people spoke in their cradles: Jesus, the son of Mary, and a man from the children of Israel named Jurayj. He was a devoted worshiper who built a place of worship and prayed in it. The children of Israel mentioned the worship of Jurayj one day, and one of them said, "If you wish, we can tempt him." They agreed, and a woman came to him and tried to seduce him, but he did not pay attention to her. So, she went to a shepherd who used to take his sheep to the foundation of Jurayj's place of worship, and she had sexual intercourse with him and became pregnant. When she gave birth to a son, the people asked her, "Who is the father?" She said, "Jurayj." So, they came to him, insulted and beat him, and destroyed his place of worship. He asked them, "What is your problem?" They said, "You committed adultery with this woman, and she gave birth to a son." He asked, "Where is the child?" They said, "Here he is." He stood up, prayed, and supplicated to Allah. Then he approached the child and stabbed him with his finger, saying, "By Allah, O boy, who is your father?" The child replied, "I am the son of the shepherd." Then they went to Jurayj and started kissing him, saying, "We will rebuild your place of worship with gold." He replied, "I have no need for that, rebuild it with mud, just as it was."

Abu Hurairah said, "It is as if I am seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating this story, placing his finger in his mouth and sucking on it." Then, he passed by a woman who was being beaten. She said, "O Allah, do not make my son like her." He left her breasts and approached the woman, saying, "O Allah, do not make me like her." Then he passed by another woman who was also being beaten. Again, he left the woman's breasts and said, "O Allah, make me like her." He said, "O my people, the rider with the sign is a tyrant among the tyrants, and this woman, they accuse her of wrongdoing, stealing, and she says, 'Allah is sufficient for me.'"

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Among the Children of Israel, there was a man called Jurayj who used to worship in a monastery. One day, his mother came to him and called him. He said, 'O Jurayj, what is it? What is more honorable for me to do? Pray or listen to my mother?' He chose to continue with his prayer. She called him again and again, saying the same thing. He kept choosing prayer over his mother. So she said, 'O Allah, do not cause him to die until he sees the life of prostitutes.' She used to take care of sheep for her family and then she would return to her cell in the monastery. She committed adultery and became pregnant. When they asked her, 'Who is responsible for this?' She said it was Jurayj, the owner of the monastery. They brought knives and tools and said, 'O Jurayj, come out, there is a dispute.' He refused to come out and continued with his prayer. So they destroyed the monastery. When Jurayj saw this, he came out and they put a rope around his and the adulterous woman's necks, parading them in front of the people. He placed his finger on her stomach and asked, 'Child, who is your father?' She replied, 'My father is so-and-so, the shepherd.' They kissed him and said, 'If you wish, we will rebuild your monastery with gold and silver.' He said, 'No, rebuild it as it was before.'"

(Using translation from Muslim 2550a)

[AI] I have seen three things from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one before me had seen and no one after me will see. I went with him on a journey until when we were on a certain path, we passed by a woman who had a child with her. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, this child has been afflicted with a harm, and we have been afflicted with harm from him. He seizes us multiple times a day." He said, "Give him to me." So she handed him to him, and he placed him between himself and the saddle of the camel. Then he blew in his mouth three times and said, "In the name of Allah, I am the servant of Allah, get out, O enemy of Allah." Then he returned him to her and said, "We will pass by this place on the return journey, so inform us what the child is like." She said, "We went and returned and found him at that place with three sheep-like animals." He asked, "What did your child do?" She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, we did not sense any change in him until now." He said, "Gather these sheep together." He then said, "Go to them and tell them that the Messenger of Allah orders both of you to return to your respective places." He said, "I was sitting with him on a certain day when a camel came, making noise and hitting its legs in front of him. Then his eyes shed tears and he said, 'Look at whose camel this is. It has some importance.'" So I went to search for its owner and found it belonged to a man from the Ansar. I called him and he asked, "What is the matter with your camel?" I asked, "What is the matter with it?" He said, "I don’t know, by Allah. We have worked on it and exhausted it to the point that it can no longer be watered. We decided just yesterday to slaughter it and divide its meat among ourselves." He said, "Don’t do that. Give it to me." The man said, "No, it is for you, O Messenger of Allah." So he marked it with the seal of charity and then sent it away.

[AI] "Do not be intimidated by them, for they will return. So We revealed (to Ali) and when it was morning, one who looked like me (Ali) went out, and when he went out, I reminded him (the people) of that incident. Ali said, 'Do not be scared by their presence, for their command is insignificant.' Ali said, 'Do not initiate the fight with them until they initiate it with you.' They sat on their knees and we prepared for battle, and we used our shields as protection. They approached us and handed us spears, and then they attacked us with arrows. Then they got closer and they picked up swords to attack us until they wanted to attack us with their swords. Then, a man from the Banu Abdi Qays tribe named Sa'sa'a bin Sohan called out three times and they asked him what he wanted. He said, 'I remind you to have God in your hearts and to fight on the land that will bear disrespect against its people. I remind you to leave behind the religion, as it will leave you behind like an arrow from a bow.' When we saw that they had placed their swords on us, Ali said, 'Get up, with the blessing of Allah the Almighty.' It was not even midday when we were scattered everywhere and we escaped, and whoever ran, ran. Ali thanked Allah and said, 'My friend (the Prophet) informed me that the leader of the enemy was a man whose hands were marked with hair, like the tail of a lizard. Go and find him.' So we looked for him and we could not find him. Then, an man from the people of Kufa came and said, 'Here he is.' Ali said, 'Allah is the Greatest, by Allah, no one will inform you about his father's lineage being the King.' People started saying, 'This is a King.' Ali said, 'Whose son is he?' They said, 'We do not know.' Then, a man from the people of Kufa came and said, 'I know this man. I was offering cattle as a dowry for a certain man from Banu Fulan, a sheikh from Banu Fulan, and I put easy-to-wear ornaments on them. When I turned my back, the cow ran away, and he called me and said, 'Oh boy, look, the cow has run away.' So I said, 'I see an image of a sunset or a sheep.' He got closer to us, and Ali said, 'Who is that man?' The people said, 'This is the one.' Ali said, 'I swear by Allah, this man has come to you from Yamama to worship Allah in the mosque of Kufa. He worshipped Allah there and called the people until they gathered around him.' Ali said, 'My friend (the Prophet) informed me that these are three brothers from the Jinn. This is the eldest, the second has a large following, and the third one is weak.' Muslim narrated this hadith in Sahih al-Masnad in an abbreviated manner, and it is an authentic hadith."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only three spoke in the cradle: Jesus, son of Mary, and the companion of Jurayj. Jurayj was a man among the Children of Israel, called Jurayj. He built a hermitage and worshipped Allah in it. One day, his mother came and called him, but he did not respond to her. Then she came to him a second day, and called him, but he did not respond to her. Then she came to him a third day, and said, 'My prayer and my mother, O Allah, do not let him die until he has seen the faces of the adulteresses.' Then, the children of Israel gathered one day, and spoke ill of Jurayj. They said, 'If you want us to think well of him, test him.' They said, 'We have already thought about it.' So she went and appeared before Jurayj, but he did not respond to her. Then she went to a shepherd who used to seek shelter in the hermitage of Jurayj with his sheep, and she tempted him. She became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. She said, 'He is from Jurayj.' So some people from the Children of Israel came and beat him, insulted him, and condemned his hermitage. He asked them, 'What is your problem?' They said, 'You fornicated with this woman, and she gave birth to a child.' He said, 'Where is the child?' They said, 'Here he is.'"

[AI] Imran ibn Husayn narrated to us, saying: We were discussing righteousness in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he began to narrate to us. He said: Among the nations before you, there was a man who was deeply devout; his name was Jurayj. He had a mother, who would come and call him in order to honor him and talk to him. One day, she came to him while he was in prayer, facing towards her, and she called him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated that Jurayj put his hand on his forehead, and she continued to call him, raising her head and putting her hand on her forehead, repeating the name "Jurayj" three times, each time repeating it three times. Jurayj said, "My Lord or my prayer?" His mother became angry and said, "O Allah, let Jurayj not die until he sees the faces of the adulterous women." The daughter of the ruler of the town heard this supplication and became pregnant and gave birth to a son. They asked her, "Who did this to you? Who is your companion?" She said, "He is the man of the prayer cell, Jurayj." He did not pay attention to this until he heard people talking about it and accusing him. When he saw this, he took a rope, tied it to a tree, and let them pull it through his nose and beat him, saying, "You are deceiving people with your actions." He said to them, "What is wrong with you?" They said, "You are the one who got the daughter of the ruler pregnant, aren't you?" He said, "What did she do?" They said, "She gave birth to a boy." He asked, "Is the boy alive?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Leave me alone." Then he performed two Rak'ahs of prayer, and when he finished, he walked to a tree and took a branch from it. Then he went to the boy, who was in his cradle, and struck him with that branch, saying, "O tyrant, who is your father?" The boy replied, "My father is so-and-so, the shepherd." They said, "If you wish, we will rebuild your prayer cell with gold, or if you prefer, with silver." He said, "Restore it as it was." Abu Harb claimed that Jurayj did not speak until only three people did so: 'Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary), the witness of Yusuf (Joseph), and the companion of Jurayj.

[AI] I saw Umar ibn Al-Khattab before he was struck by the days in Medina. He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."
