Hadith Jibril on Iman, Islam, and Ihsan

(60) muslim:8a[Chain 1] Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr b. Ḥarb > Wakīʿ > Kahmas > ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar [Chain 2] ʿUbaydullāh b. Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī And Hadhā Ḥadīthuh from my father > Kahmas > Ibn Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar

the first man who discussed Qadar (Divine Decree) in Baṣrah was Maʿbad al-Juhanī. I along with Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥimyarī set out for pilgrimage or for ʿUmrah and said: Should it so happen that we come into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we shall ask him about what is talked about Qadar. Accidentally we came across ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, while he was entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us ˹stood˺ on his right and the other stood on his left. I expected that my companion would authorize me to speak. I, therefore, said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, there have appeared some people in our land who recite the Quran and pursue knowledge. And then after talking about their affairs, added: They claim that there is no such thing as Qadar and events are not predestined. He said: When you happen to meet such people tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my ˹belief˺. ʿAbdullāh b ʿUmar swore by Allah: If any one of them had with him gold equal to the bulk of ˹the mountain˺ Uḥud and spent it ˹for the sake of Allah˺, Allah would not accept it unless he affirmed his faith in the Qadar.

He further said: My father, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, told me: One day we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes. His hair was extraordinarily black. There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last, he sat with the Prophet ﷺ. He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs,

then said: Muhammad, inform me about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Islam implies that: (1) you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and (2) you establish prayer, (3) pay Zakat, (4) observe the fast of Ramadan, and (5) perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough ˹to bear the expense of˺ the journey.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: You have told the truth. ˹ʿUmar˺ said: It amazed us that he would put the question and then he would himself verify the truth.

˹The inquirer˺ said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He replied: “That (1) you affirm your faith in Allah, (2) in His angels, (3) in His Books, (4) in His Apostles, (5) in the Day of Judgment, and (6) you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: You have told the truth.

˹The inquirer˺ again said: Inform me about Iḥsān (excellence in deeds). He said: ”That (1) you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, (2) for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you.”

˹The inquirer˺ again said: Inform me about the Hour (of the Last Day). He remarked: ”One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring.” ˹The inquirer˺ said: Tell me some of its indications. He said: ”That (1) the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and master, that (2) you will find barefooted, destitute goat herders vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings.”

˹ʿUmar˺ said: Then ˹the inquirer˺ went on his way but I stayed with (the Prophet) for a long while. He then, said to me: "ʿUmar, do you know who this inquirer was?" I replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. He remarked: "He was Jibrīl (Angel Gabriel). He came to you in order to teach you in your religion."

Three pieces of advice: Having God-consciousness, exceeding in doing good deeds, and having a good character

(61) tirmidhi:1987Muḥammad b. Bashhār > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Mahdī > Sufyān > Ḥabīb b. Abū Thābit > Maymūn b. Abū Shabīb > Abū Dhar

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Have taqwá (consciousness and fear) of Allah wherever you are, follow an bad deed with a good one to wipe it out, and treat the people with good conduct."

Earn Allah's protection by guarding your duties toward him; No harm will come to you unless it is written for you

(62a) tirmidhi:2516Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Mūsá > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak > Layth b. Saʿd and Ibn Lahīʿah > Qays b. al-Ḥajjāj > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Abū al-Walīd > Layth b. Saʿd > Qays b. al-Ḥajjāj > Ḥanash al-Ṣanʿānī > Ibn ʿAbbās

I was behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, and he said: “O young man, I will teach you some words: Guard Allah and He will guard you. Guard Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah; and when you seek help, seek help from Allah. And know that if the people were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with something that Allah has already written for you; and if they were to gather together to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with something that Allah has already written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.

Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you; The final Decree has been sealed; Victory accompanies the patience, relief accompanies grief, and ease accompanies difficulty

(62b) ahmad:2803[Chain 1] ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd > Kahmas b. al-Ḥasan > al-Ḥajjāj b. al-Furāfiṣah > Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > Ibn ʿAbbās [Chain 2] Hammām b. Yaḥyá Abū ʿAbdullāh > Ibn ʿAbbās [Chain 3] ʿAbdullah b. Lahīʿah and Nāfiʿ b. Yazīd > Qays b. al-Ḥajjāj > Ḥanash al-Sanʿānī > Ibn ʿAbbās

I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said, “O boy,” or “O little boy, shall I not teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you?” I said, “Yes.” He said: “(1) Guard Allah, and He will guard you. (2) Guard Allah, and you will find Him before you. (3) Know Him in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. (4) If you ask, then ask Allah. (5) If you seek help, then seek help from Allah."

"(6) The pen has dried with what is to be. If all creation, altogether, wanted to benefit you with something that Allah has not written for you, they would not be able to do it; and if they wanted to harm you with something that Allah has not written against you, they would not be able to do it. (7) And know that in patience over what you dislike there is much good; that victory comes with patience; that relief comes with distress; and that with hardship comes ease.”

The Sahabah did not trivialize sins at the time of the Prophet ﷺ

(63) bukhari:6492Abū al-Walīd > Mahdī > Ghaylān > Anas

Anas said, "You all do ˹bad˺ deeds which seem insignificant in your eyes, like hair, while we used to consider those ˹deeds˺ as destructive during the life-time of the Prophet ﷺ."

Abū ʿAbdullāh said that ˹mūbiqāt˺ means muhlikāt (destructive actions)

Prohibitions of Allah are of most importance to Him

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah has ghayrah (protective jealousy), and the ghayrah of Allah is ˹provoked˺ when a believer does something that Allah has prohibited."

Three men, a leper, a bald man, and a blind man are tested by Allah by curing their handicaps and giving them wealth

(65) bukhari:3464Aḥmad b. Isḥāq > ʿAmr b. ʿĀṣim > Hammām > Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū ʿAmrah > Abū Hurayrah

that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “There were three among the Children of Israel: a leper, a bald man, and a blind man. Allah willed to test them, so He sent to them an angel.”

“He came to the leper and said, ‘What thing do you love most?’ He said, ‘A good color and good skin; people have been disgusted by me.’ He said, ‘Then he touched him, and it went away from him, and he was given a good color and good skin.’ He said, ‘And which wealth do you love most?’” He said, “‘Camels,’” or he said, “‘Cattle.’” — He said: he was uncertain about that, ˹as to˺ the leper and the bald man — one of them said, “‘Camels,’” and the other said, “‘Cattle.’” So he was given a pregnant she-camel, and he said, ‘May it be blessed for you.’”

“And he came to the bald man and said, ‘What thing do you love most?’ He said, ‘Good hair, and that this go away from me; people have been disgusted by me.’ He said, ‘So he touched him, and it went away, and he was given good hair.’ He said, ‘And which wealth do you love most?’ He said, ‘Cattle.’ He said, ‘So he gave him a pregnant cow, and he said, ‘May it be blessed for you.’”

“And he came to the blind man and said, ‘What thing do you love most?’ He said, ‘That Allah restore my sight to me so that I may see people with it.’ He said, ‘So he touched him, and Allah restored his sight to him.’ He said, ‘And which wealth do you love most?’ He said, ‘Sheep.’ So he gave him a ewe that was giving birth.”

“Then these two had offspring, and this one had offspring, until this one had a valley of camels, this one had a valley of cattle, and this one had a valley of sheep.”

“Then he came to the leper in his ˹former˺ appearance and form and said, ‘A poor man, whose means have been cut off in my journey; there is no way to reach ˹my destination˺ today except by Allah, then by you. I ask you by the One who gave you the good color, the good skin, and wealth, for a camel by which I can reach ˹my destination˺ on my journey.’ He said to him, ‘˹I have˺ many rights (responsibilities) ˹upon me˺.’ He said, ‘It is as though I know you. Were you not a leper whom people found disgusting, poor, and then Allah gave you?’ He said, ‘I inherited this wealth, generation after generation.’ He said, ‘If you are lying, then may Allah return you to what you were.’”

“And he came to the bald man in his ˹former˺ appearance and form and said to him the like of what he had said to this one, and he replied to him the like of what this one had replied. He said, ‘If you are lying, then may Allah return you to what you were.’”

“And he came to the blind man in his ˹former˺ appearance and said, ‘A poor man and a wayfarer, whose means have been cut off in my journey; there is no way to reach ˹my destination˺ today except by Allah, then by you. I ask you by the One who restored your sight, for a sheep by which I can reach ˹my destination˺ on my journey.’ He said, ‘I was blind and Allah restored my sight, and I was poor and He made me rich, so take whatever you wish. By Allah, I will not make things difficult for you today regarding anything you take for Allah’s sake.’ He said, ‘Keep your wealth; you were only tested. Allah is pleased with you and displeased with your two companions.’”

A wise person controls his desires and strives for the Hereafter

(66) tirmidhi:2459[Chain 1] Sufyān b. Wakīʿ > ʿĪsá b. Yūnus > Abū Bakr b. Abū Maryam [Chain 2] ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > ʿAmr b. ʿAwn > Ibn al-Mubārak > Abū Bakr b. Abū Maryam > Ḍamrah b. Ḥabīb > Shaddād b. Aws

from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "The wise person is the one who subdues his ˹lower desires˺ and strives toward what is after death. And the weak-˹minded˺ person (a fool) is the one who follows his desires yet holds hope in ˹a reward˺ Allah."

This ḥadīth is Ḥasan and the meaning of his saying: "Who lowers himself", is to say the one who reckons with his soul in the world, before he is reckoned with, on the Day of Judgement. It has been related that Umar b. al-Khattab said: "Reckon with yourselves before you are reckoned with and prepare for the Greatest Inquisition. The reckoning of the Day of Judgement is only light for the one who reckoned with himself in the world." And, it has been related that Maymun b. Mihran said: "The slave (of Allah) will not be a Taqi until he has reckoned himself, just as he would account for where his business partner got his food and clothing."
