0.07. Certainty and Trust in Allah

Allah ﷻ said: "When the believers saw the companies, they said, 'This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and the truthfulness of Allah and His Messenger has increased them only in faith and acceptance.' " [Quran 33:22]

And Allah, the Most High, said: "Those to whom hypocrites said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.' So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty." [Quran 3:173-174]

And Allah, the Most High, said: "And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die." [Quran 25:58]

And Allah, the Most High, said: "And upon Allah let the believers rely." [Quran 14:11]

And Allah, the Most High, said: "So when you have decided, then rely upon Allah." [Quran 3:159]

And the verses commanding reliance on Allah are numerous and well-known.

And Allah, the Most High, said: "And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him." [Quran 65:3] Meaning, He is enough for him.

And Allah, the Most High, said: "The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely." [Quran 8:2]

And the verses regarding the excellence of reliance on Allah are numerous and well-known.

Hadith of Ukkashah: Those who will enter Jannah without accounting or punishment

(74) muslim:220aSaʿīd b. Manṣūr > Hushaym > Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān

[AI] I was with Said ibn Jubair, and he said, "Which of you saw the shooting star last night?" I said, "I did." Then I said, "I was not in prayer, but I had been stung." He said, "Then what did you do?" I said, "I sought ruqyah." He said, "What made you do that?" I said, "A hadith that al-Shabi told us." He said, "And what did al-Shabi tell you?" I said, "He narrated to us from Buraida ibn Husayb al-Aslami that he said, 'There is no ruqyah except for an evil eye or a sting.'" He said, "The one who confines himself to what he heard has done well. But Ibn Abbas narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The nations were shown to me, and I saw a prophet with a small group, and a prophet with one or two men, and a prophet with no one with him. Then a great multitude was raised up for me, and I thought that they were my Ummah. But it was said to me, 'This is Moses ﷺ and his people; rather, look at the horizon.' So I looked, and there was a great multitude. Then it was said to me, 'Look at the other horizon,' and there was a great multitude. Then it was said to me, 'This is your Ummah, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.'"

Then he got up and entered his house, and the people began discussing those who would enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment. Some of them said, "Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Others said, "Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and did not associate anything with Allah ﷻ." And they mentioned other things. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said, "What are you discussing?" They informed him, and he said, "They are those who do not perform ruqyah, do not ask for ruqyah, do not seek omens, and they put their trust in their Lord." Then Ukkashah ibn Mihsan stood up and said, "Pray to Allah ﷻ to make me one of them." He said, "You are one of them." Then another man stood up and said, "Pray to Allah ﷻ to make me one of them." He said, "Ukkashah has preceded you in that."

Dua for protection against misguidance

(75) muslim:2717Ḥajjāj b. al-Shāʿir > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr Abū Maʿmar > ʿAbd al-Wārith > al-Ḥusayn > Ibn Buraydah > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmur > Ibn ʿAbbās

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say:

allāhumma laka aslamtu, wa-bika āmantu, wa-ʿalayka tawakkaltu, wa-ilayka anabtu, wa-bika khāṣamtu. allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bi-ʿizzatika, lā ilāha illā anta, an tuḍillanī. anta al-ḥayy alladhī lā yamūtu, wa-al-jinnu wa-al-insu yamūtūn.

(O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, to You I have turned in repentance, and by You I have argued. O Allah, I seek refuge in Your might—there is no god but You—from You leading me astray. You are the Ever-Living who does not die, while the jinn and humankind die.)

Affirming reliance upon Allah during distress and fear

(76) bukhari:4563Aḥmad b. Yūnus > Abū Bakr > Abū Ḥuṣayn > Abū al-Ḍuḥā > Ibn ʿAbbās

"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs." Ibrahim said it when he was cast into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when they said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it increased them in faith, and they said, "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs."

Having contract trust and tawakkul in Allah enters one into Jannah

(77) muslim:2840Ḥajjāj b. al-Shāʿir > Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim b. al-Qāsim al-Laythī > Ibrāhīm / Ibn Saʿd from my father > Abū Salamah > Abū Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "There would enter Paradise people whose hearts would be like those with hearts of birds." (i.e. they fly with no fear having full reliance upon Allah).

The bedouin who was unable to kill the Prophet ﷺ

(78a) bukhari:2910Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > al-Zuhrī > Sinān b. Abū Sinān al-Duʾalī And ʾAbū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

That he proceeded in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ towards Najd to participate in an expedition. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, he too returned with him. Midday came upon them while they were in a valley having many thorny trees. Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people dismounted and dispersed to rest in the shade of the trees.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rested under a tree and hung his sword on it. We all took a nap and suddenly we heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ calling us. (We woke up) to see a bedouin with him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "This bedouin took out my sword while I was sleeping and when I woke up, I found the unsheathed sword in his hand and he challenged me saying, 'Who will save you from me?' I said thrice, 'Allah.'" The Prophet ﷺ did not punish him but sat down.

The man who took the Prophet’s sword and the prayer of fear

(78b) muslim:843aAbū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah > ʿAffān > Abān b. Yazīd > Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr > Abū Salamah > Jābir

We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until, when we were at Dhat al-Riqa, he said: Whenever we came upon a shady tree, we left it for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Then a man from the polytheists came while the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hanging on a tree. He took the sword of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and drew it, then said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Are you afraid of me?" He said, "No." He said, "Who will protect you from me?" He said, "Allah will protect me from you." He said: So the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threatened him, and he sheathed the sword and hung it back.

He said: Then the call to prayer was made, and he prayed two rakahs with one group, then they moved back, and he prayed two rakahs with the other group. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had four rakahs, while the people had two rakahs.

God provides for you when you put your trust in Him just like He provides for the early bird

(79) tirmidhi:2344ʿAlī b. Saʿīd al-Kindī > Ibn al-Mubārak > Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ > Bakr b. ʿAmr > ʿAbdullāh b. Hubayrah > Abū Tamīm al-Jayshānī > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you were to rely upon Allah with the required reliance, then you will be provided for you just as a bird is provided for: it goes out in the morning empty, and returns full."

This ḥadīth is Hasan-Ṣaḥīḥ and we do not know of it except from this context. Abū Tamīm al-Jayshānī's name is ʿAbdullāh b. Mālik.

Dua before going to sleep

(80a) bukhari:7488Musaddad > Abū al-Aḥwaṣ > Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: *"O so-and-so, when you go to your bed, say:

allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa-wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa-fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa-aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa-rahbatan ilayk, lā maljaʾa wa-lā manjā minka illā ilayk, āmantu bi-kitābika alladhī anzalta, wa-bi-nabiyyika alladhī arsalta

(O Allah, I have surrendered myself to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affair to You, and leaned my back on You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have sent down, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.)

If you die during your night, you will die upon the fitrah, and if you reach the morning, you will attain a reward."

Dua before going to sleep entrusting yourself to Allah

(80b) bukhari:247Muḥammad b. Muqātil > ʿAbdullāh > Sufyān > Manṣūr > Saʿd b. ʿUbaydah > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib

The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie or your right side and say:

allāhumma aslamtu wajhī ilayka, wa-fawwaḍtu amrī ilayka, wa-aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayka, raghbatan wa-rahbatan ilayka, lā maljaʾa wa-lā manjā minka illā ilayka. allāhumma āmantu bi-kitābika alladhī anzalta, wa-bi-nabiyyika alladhī arsalta.

(O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and sought refuge with You, turning to You in hope and fear. There is no refuge and no escape from You except toward You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent).

Then if you die on that very night, you will die with faith (i.e. or the religion of Islam). Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep)."

I repeated it before the Prophet ﷺ and when I reached "O Allah I believe in Your Book which You have revealed," I said, "wa-rasūlika" (and your Prophet). The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, (but say): 'wa-nabiyika alladhī arsalta" (Your Prophet whom You have sent), instead.

What the Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr in the Cave of Thawr

(81) muslim:2381Zuhayr b. Ḥarb > ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī > Ḥabbān b. Hilāl > Hammām > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik > Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq

He said: I looked at the feet of the polytheists above our heads while we were in the cave, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, if one of them were to look at his feet, he would see us beneath his feet." He said, "O Abu Bakr, what do you think of the two when Allah ﷻ is their third?"

Dua when exiting to go outside

(82) abudawud:5094Muslim b. Ibrāhīm > Shuʿbah > Manṣūr > al-Shaʿbī > Um Salamah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never went out of my house without raising his eye to the sky and saying:

allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika an aḍilla aw uḍall, aw azilla aw uzall, aw aẓlima aw uẓlam, aw ajhala aw yujhala ʿalayya.

(O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I go astray or be led astray, lest I slip or be made to slip, lest I wrong others or be wronged, or lest I act ignorantly or ignorance be shown toward me.)

Dua when leaving your home

(83) abudawud:5095Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥasan al-Khathʿamī > Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad > Ibn Jurayj > Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abū Ṭalḥah > Anas b. Mālik

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a man goes out of his house and says:

bismi Allāhi tawakkaltu ʿalā Allāhi, lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-Allāh

(In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah)

the following will be said to him at that time: "You are guided, defended and protected." The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?"

How Allah makes one person a means of provision for another

(84) tirmidhi:2345Muḥammad b. Bashshār > Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik

There were two brothers during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. One of them used to come to the Prophet ﷺ ˹to learn˺, while the other ˹used to˺ work ˹and earn˺. The one who worked complained about his brother to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "Perhaps you are provided for because of him."

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.
