0.13. Several Ways of Doing Good

٠.١٣۔ باب بيان كثرة طرق الخير

Allah the Exalted said: "And whatever good you do - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it." [Al-Baqarah: 215],

and He the Exalted said: "And whatever good you do - Allah knows it." [Al-Baqarah: 197],

and He the Exalted said: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it." [Al-Zalzalah: 7],

and He the Exalted said: "Whoever does righteousness - it is for his own soul." [Al-Jathiyah: 15]. 

There are many verses on this topic. As for the hadiths, they are very numerous and not limited to a few, so we will mention a selection of them:

قَالَ الله تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا تَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَإِنَّ اللهَ بِهِ عَلِيمٌ﴾ [البقرة: ٢١٥]،

وَقالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا تَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ يَعْلَمْهُ الله﴾ [البقرة: ١٩٧]،

وَقالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿فَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ﴾ [الزلزلة: ٧]،

وَقالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِ﴾ [الجاثية: ١٥] 

والآيات في الباب كثيرة. وأما الأحاديث فكثيرة جدًا، وهي غيرُ منحصرةٍ فنذكُرُ طرفًا مِنْهَا:

The least you can do to help someone is keep them safe from your harm

(117) bukhari:2518ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsá > Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father > Abū Murāwiḥ > Abū Dhar

I asked the Prophet ﷺ, “Which deed is best?” He said, “Belief in Allah and striving in His cause.” I said, “Then which slave is best to free?” He said, “The one with the highest price and the most valued by his people.” I said, “And if I cannot do that?” He said, “Help a craftsman, or do something for one who has poor judgement or is incompetent.” I said, “And if I cannot do that?” He said, “Keep people safe from your harm, for that is a charity you give on your own behalf.”

(١١٧) البخاري:٢٥١٨حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي مُرَاوِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ؓ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ، وَجِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِهِ» قُلْتُ: فَأَىُّ الرِّقَابِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: «أَغْلاَهَا ثَمَنًا وَأَنْفَسُهَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِهَا» قُلْتُ: فَإِنْ لَمْ أَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ: «تُعِينُ صَانِعًا أَوْ تَصْنَعُ لِأَخْرَقَ» قَالَ: فَإِنْ لَمْ أَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ: «تَدَعُ النَّاسَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ تَصَدَّقُ بِهَا عَلَى نَفْسِكَ»

Praying the Duha prayer is like charity given on behalf of your body

(118) muslim:720ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. Asmāʾ al-Ḍubaʿī > Mahdī / Ibn Maymūn > Wāṣil a freed slave of Abū ʿUyaynah > Yaḥyá b. ʿUqayl > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar > Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī > Abū Dhar

from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "Each morning, charity is due upon every joint of one of you. Every glorification (saying ‘subḥān Allāh’) is charity, every praise (saying ‘al-ḥamdu lillāh’) is charity, every declaration of Allah’s oneness (saying ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh’) is charity, every magnification (saying ‘Allāhu akbar’) is charity; enjoining what is right is charity and forbidding what is wrong is charity. And two rak'ahs of prayer that one performs at the time of ḍuḥā (forenoon) suffice for all of that."

(١١٨) مسلم:٧٢٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ الضُّبَعِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ وَهُوَ ابْنُ مَيْمُونٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُقَيْلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ الدُّؤَلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «يُصْبِحُ عَلَى كُلِّ سُلاَمَى مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ، فَكُلُّ تَسْبِيحَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَحْمِيدَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَهْلِيلَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلُّ تَكْبِيرَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَأَمْرٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَنَهْىٌ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَيُجْزِئُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ رَكْعَتَانِ يَرْكَعُهُمَا مِنَ الضُّحَى۔»

Islam demands that your surroundings and the environment remain clean

(119) muslim:553ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. Asmāʾ al-Ḍubaʿī And Shaybān b. Farrūkh > Mahdī b. Maymūn > Wāṣil a freed slave of Abū ʿUyaynah > Yaḥyá b. ʿUqayl > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar > Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī > Abū Dhar

from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “The deeds of my community were shown to me—the good and the bad. I found among its good deeds the removal of harm from the road, and I found among its bad deeds phlegm left in the mosque without being buried.”

(١١٩) مسلم:٥٥٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ الضُّبَعِيُّ وَشَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُقَيْلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ الدِّيلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «عُرِضَتْ عَلَىَّ أَعْمَالُ أُمَّتِي حَسَنُهَا وَسَيِّئُهَا، فَوَجَدْتُ فِي مَحَاسِنِ أَعْمَالِهَا الأَذَى يُمَاطُ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ، وَوَجَدْتُ فِي مَسَاوِي أَعْمَالِهَا النُّخَاعَةَ تَكُونُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ لاَ تُدْفَنُ»

Compete with the wealthy in giving charity through dhikr

(120) muslim:1006ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. Asmāʾ al-Ḍubaʿī > Mahdī b. Maymūn > Wāṣil a freed slave of Abū ʿUyaynah > Yaḥyá b. ʿUqayl > Yaḥyá b. Yaʿmar > Abū al-Aswad al-Dīlī > Abū Dhar

Some people among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ said to the Prophet ﷺ: “O Messenger of Allah, the people of wealth have taken all the rewards: they pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they give charity from their surplus wealth.”

He said: “Has Allah not made for you something by which you can give charity? Indeed, every glorification (saying subḥān Allāh) is a charity, every magnification (saying Allāhu akbar) is a charity, every praise (saying al-ḥamdu lillāh) is a charity, every declaration of His oneness (saying lā ilāha illā Allāh) is a charity, enjoining what is right is a charity, forbidding what is wrong is a charity, and in the sexual act of one of you there is a charity.”

They said: “O Messenger of Allah, does one of us fulfill his desire and still have a reward in it?” He said: “Do you not see that if he were to place it in what is unlawful, he would bear a sin for it? Likewise, if he places it in what is lawful, he will have a reward.”

(١٢٠) مسلم:١٠٠٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ الضُّبَعِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُقَيْلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ الدِّيلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

أَنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالُوا لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ذَهَبَ أَهْلُ الدُّثُورِ بِالأُجُورِ: يُصَلُّونَ كَمَا نُصَلِّي, وَيَصُومُونَ كَمَا نَصُومُ, وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ بِفُضُولِ أَمْوَالِهِمْ.

قَالَ: «أَوَلَيْسَ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ مَا تَصَّدَّقُونَ؟ إِنَّ بِكُلِّ تَسْبِيحَةٍ صَدَقَةً، وَكُلِّ تَكْبِيرَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلِّ تَحْمِيدَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَكُلِّ تَهْلِيلَةٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَأَمْرٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَنَهْىٌ عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ صَدَقَةٌ، وَفِي بُضْعِ أَحَدِكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ»

قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيَأْتِي أَحَدُنَا شَهْوَتَهُ وَيَكُونُ لَهُ فِيهَا أَجْرٌ؟ قَالَ: «أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ وَضَعَهَا فِي حَرَامٍ أَكَانَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا وِزْرٌ فَكَذَلِكَ إِذَا وَضَعَهَا فِي الْحَلاَلِ كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرٌ»

No good deed is insignificant, no matter how small

(121) muslim:2626Abū Ghassān al-Mismaʿī > ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar > Abū ʿĀmir / al-Khazzāz > Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ṣāmit > Abū Dhar

The Prophet ﷺ said to me: “Do not regard any good deed as insignificant, even if it is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face.”

(١٢١) مسلم:٢٦٢٦حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ يَعْنِي الْخَزَّازَ عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ

قَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «لاَ تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَلْقٍ»

Helping people is charity

(122a) bukhari:2989Isḥāq > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Hammām > Abū Hurayrah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Every joint of a person must give charity each day the sun rises: (1) acting justly between two people is charity; (2) helping a man with his riding animal—lifting him onto it or raising his belongings onto it—is charity; (3) a kind word is charity; (4) every step he takes toward prayer is charity; and (5) removing something harmful from the road is charity.”

(١٢٢a) البخاري:٢٩٨٩حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ هَمَّامٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «كُلُّ سُلاَمَى مِنَ النَّاسِ عَلَيْهِ صَدَقَةٌ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ تَطْلُعُ فِيهِ الشَّمْسُ: (١) يَعْدِلُ بَيْنَ الاِثْنَيْنِ صَدَقَةٌ، (٢) وَيُعِينُ الرَّجُلَ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ فَيَحْمِلُ عَلَيْهَا أَوْ يَرْفَعُ عَلَيْهَا مَتَاعَهُ صَدَقَةٌ، (٣) وَالْكَلِمَةُ الطَّيِّبَةُ صَدَقَةٌ، (٤) وَكُلُّ خَطْوَةٍ يَخْطُوهَا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ صَدَقَةٌ، (٥) وَيُمِيطُ الأَذَى عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ صَدَقَةٌ»

(122b) muslim:1007aḤasan b. ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī > Abū Tawbah al-Rabīʿ b. Nāfiʿ > Muʿāwiyah / Ibn Salāam > Zayd > Abū Salāam > ʿAbdullāh b. Farrūkh > ʿĀʾishah

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Every human being from the children of Adam has been created with three hundred and sixty joints. So whoever magnifies Allah (says: Allah is the Greatest), praises Allah, declares Allah’s oneness (says: there is no god but Allah), glorifies Allah, seeks Allah’s forgiveness, and removes a stone from the people’s path—or a thorn or a bone—from the people’s path, or enjoins what is right or forbids what is wrong—[doing] a number equal to those three hundred and sixty joints—then on that day he will walk having moved himself away from Hellfire.”

Abu Tawbah said: and perhaps he said, “he reaches the evening."

(١٢٢b) مسلم:١٠٠٧aحَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلاَّمٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَلاَّمٍ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَائِشَةَ تَقُولُ

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِنَّهُ خُلِقَ كُلُّ إِنْسَانٍ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ عَلَى سِتِّينَ وَثَلاَثِمَائَةِ مَفْصِلٍ۔ فَمَنْ كَبَّرَ اللَّهَ، وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَهَلَّلَ اللَّهَ، وَسَبَّحَ اللَّهَ، وَاسْتَغْفَرَ اللَّهَ، وَعَزَلَ حَجَرًا عَنْ طَرِيقِ النَّاسِ أَوْ شَوْكَةً أَوْ عَظْمًا عَنْ طَرِيقِ النَّاسِ، وَأَمَرَ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ نَهَى عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ، عَدَدَ تِلْكَ السِّتِّينَ وَالثَّلاَثِمِائَةِ السُّلاَمَى، فَإِنَّهُ يَمْشِي يَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَدْ زَحْزَحَ نَفْسَهُ عَنِ النَّارِ۔»

قَالَ أَبُو تَوْبَةَ: وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ يُمْسِي

Allah honors those who honor his houses (masajid)

(123) bukhari:662ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Yazīd b. Hārūn > Muḥammad b. Muṭarrif > Zayd b. Aslam > ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah has prepared for the one who goes to the mosque in the morning and in the afternoon an honorable place in Jannah a hospitable welcome for him going every morning and afternoon."

(١٢٣) البخاري:٦٦٢حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «مَنْ غَدَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَاحَ أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُزُلَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ كُلَّمَا غَدَا أَوْ رَاحَ»

Do not belittle gifts from your neighbors, no matter how small

(124) bukhari:2566ʿĀṣim b. ʿAlī > Ibn Abū Dhiʾb > al-Maqburī from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said: “O Muslim women, let no neighbor look down upon a gift to her neighbor, even if it is a sheep’s hoof.”

(١٢٤) البخاري:٢٥٦٦حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ {عَنْ أَبِيهِ} عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «يَا نِسَاءَ الْمُسْلِمَاتِ لاَ تَحْقِرَنَّ جَارَةٌ لِجَارَتِهَا وَلَوْ فِرْسِنَ شَاةٍ»

Modesty is one of sixty or more branches of Iman

(125) bukhari:9ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī > Sulaymān b. Bilāl > ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Faith has sixty-odd branches, and modesty is a branch of faith.”

(١٢٥) البخاري:٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلاَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «الإِيمَانُ بِضْعٌ وَسِتُّونَ شُعْبَةً: وَالْحَيَاءُ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ»

A man was granted forgiveness for giving water to a thirsty dog

(126) bukhari:2466ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah > Mālik > Suma a freed slave of Abū Bakr > Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst, and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself: This dog is suffering from thirst as I did." So, he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water, and watered it. Allah appreciated him for that deed and forgave him."

The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He replied: "Yes, there is a reward in every ˹living thing˺ with a moist liver."

(١٢٦) البخاري:٢٤٦٦حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ: «بَيْنَا رَجُلٌ بِطَرِيقٍ اشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَطَشُ فَوَجَدَ بِئْرًا فَنَزَلَ فِيهَا فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَإِذَا كَلْبٌ يَلْهَثُ يَأْكُلُ الثَّرَى مِنَ الْعَطَشِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ لَقَدْ بَلَغَ هَذَا الْكَلْبَ مِنَ الْعَطَشِ مِثْلُ الَّذِي كَانَ بَلَغَ مِنِّي فَنَزَلَ الْبِئْرَ فَمَلأَ خُفَّهُ مَاءً فَسَقَى الْكَلْبَ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ»

قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّ لَنَا فِي الْبَهَائِمِ لأَجْرًا فَقَالَ: «فِي كُلِّ ذَاتِ كَبِدٍ رَطْبَةٍ أَجْرٌ»

Removing harmful things from the pathways

(127a) muslim:1914dAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > ʿUbaydullāh > Shaybān > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "I saw a person enjoying himself in Jannah because of the tree that he cut from the path which was a source of inconvenience to the people."

(١٢٧a) مسلم:١٩١٤dحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَجُلاً يَتَقَلَّبُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فِي شَجَرَةٍ قَطَعَهَا مِنْ ظَهْرِ الطَّرِيقِ كَانَتْ تُؤْذِي النَّاسَ»

(127b) muslim:1914cZuhayr b. Ḥarb > Jarīr > Suhayl from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A person while walking along the path saw the branches of a tree lying there. He said: 'By Allah, I shall remove these from this so that these may not do harm to the Muslims', and he was admitted to Jannah."

(١٢٧b) مسلم:١٩١٤cحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَرَّ رَجُلٌ بِغُصْنِ شَجَرَةٍ عَلَى ظَهْرِ طَرِيقٍ، فَقَالَ: وَاللَّهِ لأُنَحِّيَنَّ هَذَا عَنِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ لاَ يُؤْذِيهِمْ، فَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

Removing harmful things from the pathways is a means to earn the pleasure of Allah and earn his forgiveness

(127c) muslim:1914bYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > Mālik > Suma a freed slave of Abū Bakr > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "While a person was going along the path he found a thorny branch upon it. He pushed it to a side and Allah appreciated ˹this action˺ of his and granted him pardon."

(١٢٧c) مسلم:١٩١٤bحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ سُمَىٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي بِطَرِيقٍ وَجَدَ غُصْنَ شَوْكٍ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ فَأَخَّرَهُ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ»

Being silent during the khutbah is a condition of forgiveness for ten days

(128) muslim:857bYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá And ʾAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah Waʾabū Kurayb > Yaḥyá > al-Ākharān > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever performs wudu and does it well, then comes to Jumuah, listens attentively, and remains silent, will be forgiven what is between that ˹Jumuah˺ and the next Jumuah plus an additional three days. And whoever ˹played with˺ the pebbles (i.e. distracted himself and others from the khutbah) has nullified ˹some of his reward˺.”

(١٢٨) مسلم:٨٥٧bوَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ قَالَ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرَانِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْجُمُعَةَ فَاسْتَمَعَ وَأَنْصَتَ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَزِيَادَةُ ثَلاَثَةِ أَيَّامٍ، وَمَنْ مَسَّ الْحَصَى فَقَدْ لَغَا»

Wudu washes away sins

(129) muslim:244[Chain 1] Sūwayd b. Saʿīd > Mālik b. Anas [Chain 2] Abū al-Ṭāhir > ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb > Mālik b. Anas > Suhayl b. Abū Ṣāliḥ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When a Muslim —or a believer— performs wudu and (1) washes his face, every sin that his eyes have looked at comes out from his face with the water, or with the last drop of water. (2) When he washes his hands, every sin that his hands have committed comes out from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water. (3) When he washes his feet, every sin that his feet have walked to comes out with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he emerges purified of sins.”

(١٢٩) مسلم:٢٤٤حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ الْعَبْدُ الْمُسْلِمُ أَوِ الْمُؤْمِنُ (١) فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ خَرَجَ مِنْ وَجْهِهِ كُلُّ خَطِيئَةٍ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا بِعَيْنَيْهِ مَعَ الْمَاءِ أَوْ مَعَ آخِرِ قَطْرِ الْمَاءِ، (٢) فَإِذَا غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ خَرَجَ مِنْ يَدَيْهِ كُلُّ خَطِيئَةٍ كَانَ بَطَشَتْهَا يَدَاهُ مَعَ الْمَاءِ أَوْ مَعَ آخِرِ قَطْرِ الْمَاءِ، (٣) فَإِذَا غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ خَرَجَتْ كُلُّ خَطِيئَةٍ مَشَتْهَا رِجْلاَهُ مَعَ الْمَاءِ أَوْ مَعَ آخِرِ قَطْرِ الْمَاءِ، حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ نَقِيًّا مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ»

Obligatory prayers and fasting expiates minor sins between them

(130) muslim:233cAbū al-Ṭāhir And Hārūn b. Saʿīd al-Aylī > Ibn Wahb > Abū Ṣakhr > ʿUmar b. Isḥāq a freed slave of Zāʾidah from his father > Abū Hurayrah

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: “The five ˹daily˺ prayers, and from one Friday ˹prayer˺ to the next, and from one Ramadan to the next are expiations for what is between them, so long as major sins are avoided.”

(١٣٠) مسلم:٢٣٣cحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَهَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الأَيْلِيُّ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي صَخْرٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ إِسْحَاقَ مَوْلَى زَائِدَةَ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ: «الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسُ، وَالْجُمُعَةُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ، وَرَمَضَانُ إِلَى رَمَضَانَ، مُكَفِّرَاتٌ مَا بَيْنَهُنَّ إِذَا اجْتَنَبَ الْكَبَائِرَ»

Etiquettes of going to the masjid that erases sins and raises ranks

(131) muslim:251aYaḥyá b. Ayyūb And Qutaybah And Ibn Ḥujr > Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar > Ibn Ayyūb > Ismāʿīl > al-ʿAlāʾ from his father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Shall I not direct you to that by which Allah erases sins and raises ranks?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “(1) Performing ablution thoroughly despite hardships, (2) taking many steps to the mosques, and (3) waiting for the next prayer after the prayer; that is the ribat (steadfast vigilance).”

(١٣١) مسلم:٢٥١aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ وَقُتَيْبَةُ وَابْنُ حُجْرٍ جَمِيعًا عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ ابْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَخْبَرَنِي الْعَلاَءُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «أَلاَ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى مَا يَمْحُو اللَّهُ بِهِ الْخَطَايَا وَيَرْفَعُ بِهِ الدَّرَجَاتِ؟» قَالُوا: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: «(١) إِسْبَاغُ الْوُضُوءِ عَلَى الْمَكَارِهِ، (٢) وَكَثْرَةُ الْخُطَا إِلَى الْمَسَاجِدِ، (٣) وَانْتِظَارُ الصَّلاَةِ بَعْدَ الصَّلاَةِ، فَذَلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ»

Praying Fajr and Asr in the masjid earns Jannah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever performs the two prayers of the cool times (Fajr and ʿAsr) will enter Paradise.”

Ibn Rajā’ said: Hammām narrated to us from Abū Jamrah that Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qays informed him of this. Ishāq narrated to us from Ḥabbān: Hammām narrated to us; Abū Jamrah narrated to us from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, something similar.

(١٣٢) البخاري:٥٧٤حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو جَمْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «مَنْ صَلَّى الْبَرْدَيْنِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

وَقَالَ ابْنُ رَجَاءٍ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ بِهَذَا حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ عَنْ حَبَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَمْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِثْلَهُ

The one who intends but is unable to do good deeds is rewarded the same as the one who is able

(133) bukhari:2996Maṭar b. al-Faḍl > Yazīd b. Hārūn > al-ʿAwwām > Ibrāhīm Abū Ismāʿīl al-Saksakī

I heard Abu Burdah —he and Yazid b. Abu Kabshah were traveling together on a journey— and Yazid used to fast while traveling. Abu Burdah said to him: I heard Abu Musa say repeatedly that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When a servant falls ill or travels, there is written for him the like of what he used to do when he was resident and healthy.”

(١٣٣) البخاري:٢٩٩٦حَدَّثَنَا مَطَرُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ حَدَّثَنَا الْعَوَّامُ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ السَّكْسَكِيُّ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بُرْدَةَ وَاصْطَحَبَ هُوَ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ فِي سَفَرٍ فَكَانَ يَزِيدُ يَصُومُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بُرْدَةَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مُوسَى مِرَارًا يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «إِذَا مَرِضَ الْعَبْدُ أَوْ سَافَرَ كُتِبَ لَهُ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ مُقِيمًا صَحِيحًا»

All good deeds are charity

(134) bukhari:6021ʿAlī b. ʿAyyāsh > Abū Ghassān > Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

The Prophet ﷺ said, "˹Doing˺ all that is good is a charity."

(١٣٤) البخاري:٦٠٢١حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «كُلُّ مَعْرُوفٍ صَدَقَةٌ»

Anything that is consumed from ones planting vegetation is charity for him

(135a) muslim:1552aIbn Numayr from my father > ʿAbd al-Malik > ʿAṭāʾ > Jābir

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Never does a Muslim plants a tree except that he has the reward of charity for him, for what is eaten out of that is charity; what is stolen out of that, what the beasts eat out of that, what the birds eat out of that is charity for him. (In short) none incurs a loss to him but it becomes a charity on his part."

(١٣٥a) مسلم:١٥٥٢aحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَغْرِسُ غَرْسًا إِلاَّ كَانَ مَا أُكِلَ مِنْهُ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ، وَمَا سُرِقَ مِنْهُ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ، وَمَا أَكَلَ السَّبُعُ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ، وَمَا أَكَلَتِ الطَّيْرُ فَهُوَ لَهُ صَدَقَةً، وَلاَ يَرْزَؤُهُ أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ كَانَ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ»

(135b) muslim:1552dAḥmad b. Saʿīd b. Ibrāhīm > Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah > Zakariyyāʾ b. Isḥāq > ʿAmr b. Dīnār > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

the Prophet ﷺ visited the orchard of Umm Mabad and said: "Umm Ma'bad. he who has planted this tree? is he a Muslim or a non-Muslim?" She said: Of course, he is a Muslim. He said: "No Muslim who plants (trees) and from their fruits the human beings or the beasts or birds eat, but that would be taken as an act of charity on the Day of Resurrection."

(١٣٥b) مسلم:١٥٥٢dحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ

دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى أُمِّ مَعْبَدٍ حَائِطًا فَقَالَ: «يَا أُمَّ مَعْبَدٍ، مَنْ غَرَسَ هَذَا النَّخْلَ؟ أَمُسْلِمٌ أَمْ كَافِرٌ؟» فَقَالَتْ: بَلْ مُسْلِمٌ۔ قَالَ: «فَلاَ يَغْرِسُ الْمُسْلِمُ غَرْسًا فَيَأْكُلَ مِنْهُ إِنْسَانٌ وَلاَ دَابَّةٌ وَلاَ طَيْرٌ إِلاَّ كَانَ لَهُ صَدَقَةً إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ»

(135c) muslim:1552b[Chain 1] Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Layth [Chain 2] Muḥammad b. Rumḥ > al-Layth > Abū al-Zubayr > Jābir

that the Prophet ﷺ entered the orchard belonging to Umm Mubashshir, an Ansari woman, and asked her, "Who has planted these trees of dates? A Muslim or a non-Muslim?" She said: A Muslim, of course. He then said: "Never a Muslim plants, or cultivates a land, and it out of that men eat, or the animals eat, or anything else eats, but that becomes charity on his (planter's) behalf."

(١٣٥c) مسلم:١٥٥٢bحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَى أُمِّ مُبَشِّرٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّةِ فِي نَخْلٍ لَهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «مَنْ غَرَسَ هَذَا النَّخْلَ؟ أَمُسْلِمٌ أَمْ كَافِرٌ؟» فَقَالَتْ: بَلْ مُسْلِمٌ۔ فَقَالَ: «لاَ يَغْرِسُ مُسْلِمٌ غَرْسًا وَلاَ يَزْرَعُ زَرْعًا فَيَأْكُلَ مِنْهُ إِنْسَانٌ وَلاَ دَابَّةٌ وَلاَ شَىْءٌ إِلاَّ كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ»

Each step one takes to go to the masjid is recorded as a reward

(136a) muslim:665aMuḥammad b. al-Muthanná > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith > Abū > al-Jurayrī > Abū Naḍrah > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

There were some plots vacant around the mosque. Banu Salamah decided to shift (to this land) and come near the mosque. This (news) reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to them: "I have received (information) that you intend to shift near the mosque?" They said: Yes, Messenger of Allah, we have taken this decision. Upon this he said: "O Banu Salamah, live in your houses, for your steps are recorded; live in your houses, for your steps are recorded."

(١٣٦a) مسلم:٦٦٥aحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

خَلَتِ الْبِقَاعُ حَوْلَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَرَادَ بَنُو سَلِمَةَ أَنْ يَنْتَقِلُوا إِلَى قُرْبِ الْمَسْجِدِ. فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكُمْ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَنْتَقِلُوا قُرْبَ الْمَسْجِدِ؟» قَالُوا: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ أَرَدْنَا ذَلِكَ۔ فَقَالَ: «يَا بَنِي سَلِمَةَ دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ آثَارُكُمْ دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ آثَارُكُمْ»

(136b) muslim:664Ḥajjāj b. al-Shāʿir > Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah > Zakariyyāʾ b. Isḥāq > Abū al-Zubayr > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh

Our houses were situated far away from the mosque; we, therefore, decided to sell our houses so that we may be able to come near the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us  ˹to do so˺ and said: "There is for every step a degree ˹of reward˺ for you."

(١٣٦b) مسلم:٦٦٤وَحَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

كَانَتْ دِيَارُنَا نَائِيَةً عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَبِيعَ بُيُوتَنَا فَنَقْتَرِبَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ. فَنَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ لَكُمْ بِكُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ دَرَجَةً»

(137) muslim:663aYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > ʿAbthar > Sulaymān al-Taymī > Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī > Ubay b. Kaʿb

There was a man, and I do not know of any other man, whose house was farther than his from the mosque and he never missed the prayer (in congregation). It was said to him or I said to him: It you were to buy a donkey you could ride upon it In the dark nights and in the burning sand. He said: I do not like my house to be situated by the side of the mosque, for I (eagerly) desire that my steps towards the mosque and back from it, should be recorded when I return to my family. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah has gathered all these for you ˹as rewards˺."

(١٣٧) مسلم:٦٦٣aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْثَرٌ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ

كَانَ رَجُلٌ، لاَ أَعْلَمُ رَجُلاً أَبْعَدَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ مِنْهُ، وَكَانَ لاَ تُخْطِئُهُ صَلاَةٌ۔ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ أَوْ قُلْتُ لَهُ: لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ حِمَارًا تَرْكَبُهُ فِي الظَّلْمَاءِ وَفِي الرَّمْضَاءِ۔ قَالَ: مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّ مَنْزِلِي إِلَى جَنْبِ الْمَسْجِدِ، إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ لِي مَمْشَاىَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَرُجُوعِي إِذَا رَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَهْلِي۔ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «قَدْ جَمَعَ اللَّهُ لَكَ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ»

There are fourteen virtues

(138) bukhari:2631Musaddad > ʿĪsá b. Yūnus > al-Awzāʿī > Ḥassān b. ʿAṭiyyah > Abū Kabshah al-Salūlī > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There are forty virtues, the highest of them being to lend a milch-goat. No one performs any one of them, hoping for its reward and believing in what is promised for it, except that Allah will admit him to Paradise because of it.”

Hassan said: So we counted what is below lending a milch-goat, such as returning a greeting, saying the tashmiyah 'yarḥamuk Allāh' (may Allah have mercy on you) to one who sneezes, removing harm from the road, and the like, but we were not able to reach fifteen virtues.

(١٣٨) البخاري:٢٦٣١حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ عَنْ حَسَّانَ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ السَّلُولِيِّ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو ؓ يَقُولُ

قالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَرْبَعُونَ خَصْلَةً، أَعْلَاهُنَّ: مَنِيحَةُ الْعَنْزِ، ما مِنْ عَامِلٍ يَعْمَلُ بِخَصْلَةٍ منها رَجَاءَ ثَوَابِها، وَتَصْدِيقَ مَوْعُودِها، إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ بِها الْجَنَّةَ» 

قالَ حَسَّانُ: فَعَدَدْنا ما دُونَ مَنِيحَةِ الْعَنْزِ، مِنْ رَدِّ السَّلَامِ، وَتَشْمِيتِ الْعَاطِسِ، وَإِمَاطَةِ الأَذَى عن الطَّرِيقِ وَنَحْوِهِ، فَما اسْتَطَعْنا أَنْ نَبْلُغَ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ خَصْلَةً.

No charity is insignificant

(139a) bukhari:1417Sulaymān b. Ḥarb > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > ʿAbdullāh b. Maʿqil > ʿAdī b. Ḥātim

I heard the the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Protect yourself from Hellfire even by giving half a date ˹in charity˺."

(١٣٩a) البخاري:١٤١٧حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَعْقِلٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ ؓ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ۔»

You want every small good deed to count during your hisab in front of Allah ﷻ

(139b) bukhari:7512ʿAlī b. Ḥujr > ʿĪsá b. Yūnus > al-Aʿmash > Khaythamah > ʿAdī b. Ḥātim

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There will be none among you but his Lord will talk to him, and there will be no interpreter between him and Allah. He will look to his right and see nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look to his left and see nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look in front of him and see nothing but the Hellfire facing him. So save yourself from the Hellfire even with half a date ˹given in charity˺."

al-Aʿmash said: ʿAmr bin Murra said, Khaythama narrated the same and added, "even with a good word."

(١٣٩b) البخاري:٧٥١٢حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «مَا مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا سَيُكَلِّمُهُ رَبُّهُ لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ تَُرْجُمَانٌ، فَيَنْظُرُ أَيْمَنَ مِنْهُ فَلَا يَرَى إِلَّا مَا قَدَّمَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ، وَيَنْظُرُ أَشْأَمَ مِنْهُ فَلَا يَرَى إِلَّا مَا قَدَّمَ، وَيَنْظُرُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَلَا يَرَى إِلَّا النَّارَ تِلْقَاءَ وَجْهِهِ، فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ»

قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ: وَحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ: مِثْلَهُ. وَزَادَ فِيهِ: «وَلَوْ بِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ»

Showing gratitude to Allah when eating and drinking

(140) muslim:2734aAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah And Ibn Numayr And al-Lafẓ Ibn Numayr > Abū Usāmah And Muḥammad b. Bishr > Zakariyyāʾ b. Abū Zāʾidah > Saʿīd b. Abū Burdah > Anas b. Mālik

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah is pleased with His servant who says: al-ḥamdu lillāh while taking a morsel of food and while drinking."

(١٤٠) مسلم:٢٧٣٤aحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيَرْضَى عَنِ الْعَبْدِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الأَكْلَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا أَوْ يَشْرَبَ الشَّرْبَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا»

Alternatives charitable acts when one is not able to give money

(141) bukhari:6022Ādam > Shuʿbah > Saʿīd b. Abū Burdah b. Abū Mūsá al-Ashʿarī from his father from his grandfather

The Prophet ﷺ said, "On every Muslim there is enjoined charity." They asked, "If one has nothing?' He said, "He should work with his hands so that he may benefit himself and give in charity." They said, "If he cannot work or does not work?" He said, "Then he should help the oppressed unhappy person." They said, "If he cannot do that?" He said, "Then he should enjoin what is good." They said, "If he cannot do that?" He said, "Then he should refrain from doing evil, for that will be considered for Him as charity. "

(١٤١) البخاري:٦٠٢٢حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ»، قَالُوا: فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ؟ قَالَ: «فَيَعْمَلُ بِيَدَيْهِ فَيَنْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ»، قَالُوا: فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ: «فَيُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ»، قَالُوا: فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ: «فَيَأْمُرُ بِالْخَيْرِ»، أَوْ قَالَ: «بِالْمَعْرُوفِ» قَالَ: فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ؟ قَالَ: «فَيُمْسِكُ عَنِ الشَّرِّ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ.»
