0.31. Making Peace Among People

Allah ﷻ said: “There is no good in much of their private conversation, except for one who enjoins charity, or what is right, or reconciliation between people” [Nisa 114],

And ﷻ said: “Reconciliation is better” [Nisa 128],

And ﷻ said: “So fear Allah and set right what is between you” [Anfal 1],

And ﷻ said: “The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation between your two brothers” [Hujurat 10].

Helping people is charity

(248) bukhari:2989Isḥāq > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Hammām > Abū Hurayrah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Every joint of a person must give charity each day the sun rises: (1) acting justly between two people is charity; (2) helping a man with his riding animal—lifting him onto it or raising his belongings onto it—is charity; (3) a kind word is charity; (4) every step he takes toward prayer is charity; and (5) removing something harmful from the road is charity.”

Reconciling between people is not lying

(249a) bukhari:2692ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbdullāh > Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd > Ṣāliḥ > Ibn Shihāb > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqbah

She heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The liar is not the one who reconciles between people, conveying good or saying good."

Concessions in telling a lie for reconciliation, war, and between spouses

(249b) muslim:2605aḤarmalah b. Yaḥyā > Ibn Wahb > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf > Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ

that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The liar is not the one who reconciles between people, says good, and conveys good."

Ibn Shihab ˹al-Zuhri˺ said: I have not heard of permission being granted in anything that people call lying except in three cases: war, reconciliation between people, a man’s speech to his wife, and a woman’s speech to her husband.

Showing kindness to a debtor

(250) bukhari:2705Ismāʿīl b. Abī Uways > akhī > Sulaymān > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd > Abū al-Rijāl Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > ʿAmrah bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > ʿĀʾishah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the voices of disputants at the door, their voices raised. One of them was asking the other to reduce the amount and to be lenient with him regarding something, while he was saying, “By Allah, I will not do it.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said: “Where is the one swearing by Allah that he will not do good?” He said, “I am, O Messenger of Allah; he may have whichever of that he likes.”

Saying Subhan Allah to alert the imam in prayer

(251) bukhari:1234Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > Abū Ḥāzim > Sahl b. Saʿd al-Sāʿidī

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ learned that there was some matter between ˹the tribe of˺ Banu Amr b. Awf, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with some people accompanying him to reconcile between them.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed, and the time for prayer came, so Bilal came to Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ and said, “O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been delayed, and the time for prayer has come. Would you lead the people in prayer?” He said, “Yes, if you wish.” Bilal gave the iqamah, and Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ stepped forward and pronounced the takbir for the people. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came walking through the rows until he stood in the row.

The people began clapping, and Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ would not turn around in his prayer. When the people clapped more, he turned and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, instructing him to continue praying. Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ raised his hands and praised Allah, then stepped backward until he stood in the row. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stepped forward and led the people in prayer.

When he finished, he turned to the people and said: "O people, why is it that when something happens to you during prayer, you start clapping? Clapping is only for women. Whoever has something happen to him in his prayer should say: Subhan Allah, for no one hears him when he says: Subhan Allah except that he will turn around. O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from leading the people in prayer when I gestured to you?" Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ said, “It was not proper for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
