Collected by Bukhārī, Muslim, Nasāʾī, Aḥmad, Ḥākim, Bazzār, Ṭabarānī, Nasāʾī's Kubrá, Bayhaqī, Suyūṭī(the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar stood up and said, "By Allah! Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not dead!" 'Umar (later on) said, "By Allah! Nothing occurred to my mind except that." He said, "Verily! Allah will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men." Then Abu Bakr came and uncovered the face of Messenger of Allah ﷺ, kissed him and said, "Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you, (O Messenger of Allah ﷺ), you are good in life and in death. By Allah in Whose Hands my life is, Allah will never make you taste death twice." Then he went out and said, "O oath-taker! Don't be hasty." When Abu Bakr spoke, 'Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised and glorified Allah and said, No doubt! Whoever worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die." Then he recited Allah's Statement.:-- "(O Muhammad) Verily you will die, and they also will die." (39.30) He also recited:-- "Muhammad is no more than an Apostle; and indeed many Apostles have passed away, before him, If he dies Or is killed, will you then Turn back on your heels? And he who turns back On his heels, not the least Harm will he do to Allah And Allah will give reward to those Who are grateful." (3.144) The people wept loudly, and the Ansar were assembled with Sad bin 'Ubada in the shed of Bani Saida. They said (to the emigrants). "There should be one 'Amir from us and one from you." Then Abu Bakr, Umar bin Al-Khattab and Abu 'baida bin Al-Jarrah went to them. 'Umar wanted to speak but Abu Bakr stopped him. 'Umar later on used to say, "By Allah, I intended only to say something that appealed to me and I was afraid that Abu Bakr would not speak so well. Then Abu Bakr spoke and his speech was very eloquent. He said in his statement, "We are the rulers and you (Ansars) are the ministers (i.e. advisers)," Hubab bin Al-Mundhir said, "No, by Allah we won't accept this. But there must be a ruler from us and a ruler from you." Abu Bakr said, "No, we will be the rulers and you will be the ministers, for they (i.e. Quarish) are the best family amongst the 'Arabs and of best origin. So you should elect either 'Umar or Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah as your ruler." 'Umar said (to Abu Bakr), "No but we elect you, for you are our chief and the best amongst us and the most beloved of all of us to Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So 'Umar took Abu Bakr's hand and gave the pledge of allegiance and the people too gave the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr. Someone said, "You have killed Sad bin Ubada." 'Umar said, "Allah has killed him."

Ibn Abbas's ᴿᴬ deep understanding of the Quran when Umar ᴿᴬ quizzed him
Umar used to admit me among the elders of Badr. Some of them said, “Why do you admit this young man among us when we have sons like him?” He said, “He is among those whom you already know.”
He said: So he summoned them one day and summoned me with them. He said: I did not think he summoned me that day except to show them something of me. He said, “What do you say about: “When the help of Allah and the conquest come, and you see the people entering...” until he completed the surah?” Some of them said, “We were commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when we are helped and victory is granted to us.” Others said, “We do not know,” or some of them said nothing.
Then he said to me, “O Ibn Abbas, is that what you say?” I said, “No.” He said, “Then what do you say?” I said, “It is the appointed time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which Allah informed him of: “When the help of Allah and the conquest come,” meaning the conquest of Makkah; that is the sign of your appointed time. “So glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.” Umar said, “I know nothing of it except what you know.”
When Abu Talib was on his death bed, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and found with him, Abu Jahl and ʿAbdullah bin Abi Umaiya bin Al-Mughira. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, a sentence with which I will defend you before Allah." On that Abu Jahl and ʿAbdullah bin Abi Umaiya said to Abu Talib, "Will you now leave the religion of ʿAbdul Muttalib?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept on inviting him to say that sentence while the other two kept on repeating their sentence before him till Abu Talib said as the last thing he said to them, "I am on the religion of ʿAbdul Muttalib," and refused to say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah. On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, I will keep on asking Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden (by Allah) to do so." So Allah revealed:-- 'It is not fitting for the Prophet ﷺ and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans.' (9.113) And then Allah revealed especially about Abu Talib:--'Verily! You (O, Muhammad) guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He will.' (28.56)

ʿUmar used to make me sit with the elderly men who had fought in the Battle of Badr. Some of them felt it (did not like that) and said to ʿUmar "Why do you bring in this boy to sit with us while we have sons like him?" ʿUmar replied, "Because of what you know of his position (i.e. his religious knowledge.)" One day ʿUmar called me and made me sit in the gathering of those people; and I think that he called me just to show them. (my religious knowledge). ʿUmar then asked them (in my presence). "What do you say about the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: 'When comes Help of Allah (to you O, Muhammad against your enemies) and the conquest (of Mecca).' (110.1) Some of them said, "We are ordered to praise Allah and ask for His forgiveness when Allah's Help and the conquest (of Mecca) comes to us." Some others kept quiet and did not say anything. On that, ʿUmar asked me, "Do you say the same, O Ibn ʿAbbas?" I replied, "No." He said, 'What do you say then?" I replied, "That is the sign of the death of Messenger of Allah ﷺ which Allah informed him of. Allah said:-- '(O Muhammad) When comes the Help of Allah (to you against your enemies) and the conquest (of Mecca) (which is the sign of your death). You should celebrate the praises of your Lord and ask for His Forgiveness, and He is the One Who accepts the repentance and forgives.' (110.3) On that ʿUmar said, "I do not know anything about it other than what you have said."

I saw (the dead body) of Abdullah b. Zubair hanging on the road of Medina (leading to Mecca). The Quraish passed by it and other people too, that Abdullah b. Umar happened to pass by it. He stood up there and said: May there be peace upon you, Abu Khubaib (the Kunya of Hadrat 'Abdullah b. Zubair), may there be peace upon you Abu Khubaib, may there be peace upon you, Abu Khubaib! By Allah, I used to forbid you from this; by Allah, I used to forbid you from this, by Allah I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, so far as I know, you had been very much devoted to fasting and prayer and you had been paying very much care to cementing the ties of blood. By Allah, the group to which you belong (are labelled) as (a) wicked (person) is indeed a fine group. Then 'Abdullah b. 'Umar went away. The stand 'Abdullah (b. 'Umar) took in regard to the inhuman treatment (meted out to 'Abdullah b. Zubair) and his words (in that connection) were conveyed to Hajjaj (b. Yusuf) and (as a consequence of that) he (the body of Abdullah b. Zubair) was brought down from the stump (the scaffold) by which it was hanging and thrown into the graves of the Jews. He (Hajjaj) sent (his messenger) to Asma' (bint Abu Bakr, 'Abdullah's mother). But she refused to come. He again sent the messenger to her with the message that she must come, otherwise he would bring her forcibly catching hold of her hair. But she again refused and said: By Allah, I will not come to you until you send one to me who would drag me by pulling my hair. Thereupon he said: Bring me my shoes. He put on his shoes and walked on quickly swollen with vanity and pride until he came to her and said: How do you find what I have done with the enemy of Allah? She said: I find that you wronged him in this world, whereas he has spoiled your next life. It has been conveyed to me that you used to call him ('Abdullah b. Zubair) as the son of one having two belts. By Allah, I am indeed (a woman) of two belts. One is that with the help of which I used to suspend high the food of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and that of Abu Bakr (making it out of the reach) of animals and, so far as the second belt is concerned, that is the belt which no woman can dispense with. Verily Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us that in Thaqif, there would be born a great liar and great murderer. The liar we have seen, and as far as the murderer is concerned, I do not find anyone else besides you. 'Thereupon he (Hajjaj) stood up and did not give any reply to her.

"On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah [SAW] granted amnesty to the people, except four men and two women. He said: 'Kill them, even if you find them clinging to the covers of Ka'bah.' (They were) 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl, 'Abdullah bin Khatal, Miqyas bin Subabah and 'Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi As-Sarh. 'Abdullah bin Khatl was caught while he was clinging to the covers of Ka'bah. Sa'eed bin Huraith and 'Ammar bin Yasir both rushed toward him, but Sa'eed, who was the younger of the two, got there before 'Ammar, and he killed him. Miqyas bin Subabah was caught by the people in the marketplace, and they killed him. 'Ikrimah traveled by sea, and he was caught in a storm. The crew of the ship said: 'Turn sincerely toward Allah, for your (false) gods cannot help you at all in this situation.' 'Ikrimah said: 'By Allah, if nothing came to save me at sea except sincerity toward Allah then nothing else will save me on land. O Allah, I promise You that if You save me from this predicament I will go to Muhammad [SAW] and put my hand in his, and I am sure that I will find him generous and forgiving.' So he came, and accepted Islam. 'Abdullah (bin Sa'd) bin Abi Sarh hid in the house of 'Uthman bin 'Affan, and when the Messenger of Allah [SAW] called the people to give their Oath of Allegiance, he brought him, and made him stand before the Prophet [SAW]. He ('Uthman) said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Accept the allegiance of 'Abdullah.' He raised his head and looked at him three times, refusing his allegiance each time, then he accepted his allegiance after three times. Then he turned to his Companions and said: 'Was there not any sensible man among you who would get up when he saw me refusing to give him my hand and kill him?' They said: 'We did not know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart. Why did you not gesture to us with your eyes?' He said: 'It is not befitting for a Prophet that his eyes be deceitful.'"

[AI] Umar ibn al-Khattab used to give permission to the people of Badr to go out and give permission to me to go with them. Some of them said, "He allows this young man to go with us. Who among our sons is like him?" Umar said, "Indeed, he is one of those whom you have already known." He granted them permission one day, and he granted me permission with them. He then asked them about this Surah when its verses were revealed: "When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest. And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes" (Quran 110:1-2). They said, "Allah ordered His Prophetﷺ that whenever this Surah is revealed upon him, he should seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him." Umar said, "What do you say, O Ibn Abbas?" I said, "It is not as you have said. Rather, Allah informed His Prophetﷺ about the coming of his own death, and He said: 'So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance'" (Quran 110:3). Umar said to them, "How do you blame me for what you see?"

[AI] I went out with Ibrahim ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Rabee'ah. Ibrahim ibn Abdul Rahman sent Ibrahim ibn Abdul Rahman to ibn Saad. When we were in Al-Arj, a son of Saad and Saad himself, who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his journey, came to us. Ibrahim asked me, "What did your father tell you?" Ibn Saad replied, "My father told me that the Messenger of Allah came to them with Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr had a nursling daughter with them. The Messenger of Allah intended to shorten the journey to Madinah, so Saad said, 'This is a she-camel from Al-Ghair which has two disorders, but there are two men from the Muslims who are called Al-Muhanaan (the humiliated). If you want, we can replace them with you.' The Prophet ﷺ accepted and said, 'Yes, replace them with us.' Saad said, 'Then we set out until one of them said to his companion, 'This is the Yamani.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called them and presented Islam to them, and they embraced Islam. Then he asked them their names, and they said, 'We are Al-Muhanaan.' He said, 'No, you are Al-Mukraman (honored).' He ordered them to go ahead to Madinah. We continued until we reached Dhaher Qubaa, where Bani Amr Ibn Awf met us. The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'Where is Abu Umamah As'ad ibn Zurarah?' Saad ibn Khaythamah replied, 'He was hurt before me, O Messenger of Allah. Shouldn't I inform him about you?' Then he went until he reached the palm grove and found the water filled. The Prophet ﷺ looked at Abu Bakr and said, 'O Abu Bakr, this is the place where I saw myself descending into a grassy area like the grassy area of Bani Mudlij.'

[AI] Al-Hadith (the narrator of the Hadith) reported that 'Ubadah said to Abu Hurayrah, "O Abu Hurayrah, you were not with us when we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We pledged allegiance to him to hear and obey, whether it is easy or difficult, to spend in ease and hardship, to command what is good and forbid what is evil, to speak about Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, without fearing the blame of anyone, and to support the Prophet ﷺ when he came to Madinah, withholding from him what we withhold from ourselves, our wives, and children, and in return, Paradise is promised to us. This is the pledge of allegiance that we pledged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whoever breaks it, breaks it against himself, and whoever fulfills what he pledged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fulfills it to Allah and his Prophet ﷺ."
Then Muawiyah wrote to 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, informing him that 'Ubadah ibn As-Samit has disrupted the people and their belongings in Ash-Sham (Syria). He then said to 'Uthman, "Either return 'Ubadah to you, or I will take action between him and Ash-Sham." So 'Uthman wrote to 'Ubadah, instructing him to return to Madinah. He sent 'Ubadah until he reached Madinah. He entered the house of 'Uthman, and there was no one in the house except a man from the Sahabah who had reached the people. 'Uthman was sitting in a corner of the house. He turned towards 'Ubadah and said, "O 'Ubadah ibn As-Samit, what is the matter between us and you?" 'Ubadah stood among the people and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Al-Qasim Muhammad ﷺ, saying, 'After me there will be leaders who will order you to do what you know, but you will deny it, and they will forbid you from what you know, but you will acknowledge it. Therefore, do not obey those who disobey Allah, and do not dispute about your Lord."

[AI] Al-Umari informed me that it wouldn't matter to you if you gained weight, and who before you would become lean, and who before me. And with God's assistance, Amr wrote: Peace be upon you. Afterward, I am here for you. A flock of camels has come to you, the first of which is with you, and the last of which is with me. Although I hope to find two ways to carry in the sea. When the first flock arrived, he called Zubair and said, "Go out with the first flock and face it tomorrow. Carry to each household what you can carry to me, and if you are unable to carry it, pass each household with a camel with what is on it, and let them dress people like we dressed them, and let them slaughter the camel, carry its hair, arrange its meat, and tan its skin. Then let them take a bowl of dough and a bowl of fat, and a handful of flour. So let them cook and eat until Allah brings them sustenance." Zubair refused to go out and said, "By Allah, you won't find anything like it until you leave this world." Then he called another person, who I think is Talha, and he came. Then he called Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, and he participated in that. When he returned, he sent him one thousand dinars. Abu Ubaidah said, "I didn't do this for you, son of Khattab. I only did it for Allah, and I don't take anything in return for it." Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us some things that we were hesitant about, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ insisted on them. Accept it, O man, and seek assistance from it in your worldly affairs." Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah accepted it.

[AI] On the night of the Confederates, there were only twelve men left with the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was sitting in the cold and he said, "O son of Yemen, get up and go to the camp of the Confederates and see their situation." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I only came to you out of shyness from you because of the cold." He said, "Go forward with determination, O son of Yemen, and the morning cold will not harm you until you come back to me." So I went to their camp and I found Abu Sufyan kindling a fire among a group of people who had separated from the Confederates. He continued, "When I sat among them, Abu Sufyan thought that someone had entered their camp who did not belong to them. So he told everyone to hold the hand of the person sitting next to them." I struck the hand of the person on my right with my hand and held his hand, then I struck the hand of the person on my left with my hand and held his hand. I remained with them for a while, then I stood up and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was standing in prayer. He motioned to me with his hand to come closer, so I approached. Then he motioned to me again to come closer, so I approached until he poured some of the cloth he was wearing on me while he was praying. When he finished his prayer, he said, "O son of Yemen, sit down. What is the news?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, the people have separated from Abu Sufyan, and only a group remains who are kindling the fire. Allah has poured on them the like of the cold that He poured on us, but we hope for from Allah what they do not hope for."

[AI] Peace be upon you, Abu Khuwailib, who said it three times. I indeed forbade you from doing so three times. You were indeed fasting and observing night prayer, maintaining ties of kinship. He said, "Al-Hajjaj reached the position of Abdullah bin Umar and brought him down, throwing him in the graves of the Jews. He sent a message to Asma bint Abi Bakr to come to him, but she refused as her eyesight had gone. So, he sent her a message saying, 'Either you come to me or I will send someone to drag you by your hair.' She said, 'By Allah, I will not come to you until you send me someone to drag me by my hair.' So, his messenger went to her and informed her of this. She said, 'O boy, take hold of my garment and make me walk until I come to him.' So, he held her garment and she walked, dragging the feet. When she came to him, he asked her, 'How did you see what Allah has done to the enemy of Allah?' She replied, 'I have indeed seen that you have ruined his worldly life and his Hereafter. But as for the one whom you used to insult with regards to her two waistlines, surely I (Asma bint Abu Bakr) had one waistline which I covered with food for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the ants, and the other waistline was for the women and we cannot do without it.' I have indeed heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Indeed, there is a liar and a troublemaker in Ta'if.' As for the liar, we have seen him, and as for the troublemaker, it is you.' Then he left. The narrations have been authenticated in Musnad through the hearing of Abdullah bin Zubair from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his coming and going to and from him when he was only eight years old. And I remember by the will of Allah the Most High, in this place, his narrations that indicate this. Indeed, the exit (to Madinah) in his Musnad from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is ninety-seven hadiths.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that the Children of Israel appointed a caliph over them, and he began to pray to the moon above the House of the Holy Temple and mentioned things he had done. Then, a rope was lowered for him, and he held onto it, and it became attached to the mosque. He went until he reached a people on the shore of the sea, and he found them making cheese. He asked them how they obtained this cheese, and they informed him. So, he took the cheese with him and ate from the work of his own hands. When the time for prayer came, he purified himself and prayed. Then, the worker mentioned that among them was a man who used to do certain things and sent for him, but he refused to come. However, he eventually came riding on his mount, and when the worker saw him, he ran away. The man followed him, and when he caught up to him, he asked him to wait for him so he could speak a word to him. The man stood and spoke to him and informed him that he was a king who had fled out of fear of his sins. He said, "I am following you in this matter, so let us both worship Allah." They both prayed to Allah to cause both of them to die. They both died, and Abdullah said, "If I were in Rumailah in Egypt, I would have shown you their graves as described by the Prophet ﷺ."

ʿUmar used to admit me (into his house) along with the old men who had fought in the Badr battle. Some of them said (to ʿUmar), "Why do you allow this young man to enter with us, while we have sons of his own age? " ʿUmar said, "You know what person he is." One day ʿUmar called them and called me along with them, I had thought he called me on that day to show them something about me (i.e. my knowledge). ʿUmar asked them, "What do you say about (the Sura): "When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest (of Mecca) And you see mankind entering the Religion of Allah (i.e. Islam) in crowds. 'So celebrate the Praises Of your Lord and ask for His forgiveness, Truly, He is the One Who accepts repentance and forgives." (110.1-3) Some of them replied, "We are ordered to praise Allah and repent to Him if we are helped and granted victory." Some said, "We do not know." Others kept quiet. ʿUmar then said to me, "Do you say similarly?" I said, "No." ʿUmar said "What do you say then?" I said, "This Verse indicates the approaching of the death of Messenger of Allah ﷺ of which Allah informed him. When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest, i.e. the Conquest of Mecca, that will be the sign of your Prophet's) approaching death, so testify the uniqueness of your Lord (i.e. Allah) and praise Him and repent to Him as He is ready to forgive." On that, ʿUmar said, "I do not know about it anything other than what you know." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4294)

[AI] "Peace be upon you O Abu Khubayb" he said it three times. Then he said, "I forbade you from doing that, and you did it three times. You were indeed a righteous person who maintained family ties. The news of this reached Hajjaj bin Abdullah, so he descended and threw him into the graves of the Jews. He then sent a message to Asmaa bint Abu Bakr to come to him, but her eyesight had deteriorated and she refused. So he sent her a message saying that she must come, or else he would send someone to drag her by her plaits. She said, "By Allah, I will not come to you unless you send someone to drag me by my plaits." His messenger came and informed him, so he said, "O boy, bring my sandals." He brought them to him while they were heating up, until he reached her. He said to her, "Did you see what Allah did to the enemy of Allah?" She replied, "I see that you have destroyed his worldly life and corrupted your Hereafter. As for what you used to compliment him with, indeed I had two plaits. One of them was used to cover the food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the ants, and the other plait is necessary for women. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Indeed, in Thaqif there is someone who is evildoer and a liar.' We have seen the liar, and you are the evildoer." He said, "So he left."

[AI] "Peace be upon you, Abu Khubayb," he said it three times. "I have forbidden you to say that three times. You used to fast and pray regularly and maintain family ties. This reached Hajjaj, the governor of Abdullah bin Umar, who ordered for him to be brought down and thrown into the graves of the Jews. He also sent Asma bint Abu Bakr a message to come to him, but she refused as her eyesight had deteriorated. He then sent someone to drag her by her hair. She said, 'By Allah, I will not come to you unless you send someone to drag me by my hair.' So his messenger came to him and informed him of her response. He said, 'Oh boy, bring me my staff.' The boy brought him his staff and he supported himself on it until he reached her. He then asked her, 'How did you witness Allah's treatment of His enemy?' She replied, 'I saw that you have ruined his worldly life and corrupted your hereafter. As for what you accused him of in regards to both ends (of the spectrum), verily I have two ends (of the spectrum). One end safeguards the food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from ants, and there is an end that women cannot do without.' I also heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Verily, there is a liar in the city of Thaqif.' We now know who the liar is, and you are the one causing strife." And then he left.

Why did you not gesture to us with your eyes?' He said: 'It is not befitting for a Prophet that his eyes be deceitful.'" [AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey with his companions when they became extremely thirsty. Two men from his companions, whom I think were Ali and Zubayr or others, went ahead and found a woman with two water containers on a camel. They said to her, "Answer the call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She asked, "Who is the Messenger of Allah, this Jew?" They replied, "He is the one you are addressing, and he is truly the Messenger of Allah." They brought her to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that the water be poured into a vessel made from the two containers. He then asked for the water to be returned to the containers, and ordered the loosening of the knots on the containers. They were opened, and the people were instructed to fill their containers and drink. That day, no vessel or container was left un-filled. Imran said, "It seemed as if it wasn't filled except to be filled." The Prophet ﷺ ordered his garment to be spread out, and his companions brought their provisions until his garment was filled. He told the woman to go, saying, "We did not take anything from your water, but it was Allah who gave us to drink." She went and informed her family, saying, "I have met the most knowledgeable person or indeed he is the Messenger of Allah." The people of that village embraced Islam, as reported in Sahihain from the hadith of Awf ibn Abi Jamilah. The last incident is that the Prophet ﷺ gave a container of water to the one who had an impurity. He said to him, "Go and pour it over yourself while standing and see what happens to its water." This was narrated by Abu Abdullah Al-Haafiz, Ahmad ibn Ja'far Al-Qatti'i, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Yahya ibn Sa'id from Awf, mentioning it in a similar manner.

[AI] Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "If it were not for the fact that I am leaving the people with a clear path, they would have nothing. Every time a village was conquered, I would divide it into two shares, just as the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , divided Khaibar. But I leave it to those who come after them to divide it as they wish." It was narrated by Nafi', the freed slave of Ibn Umar, who said: "The people achieved a great victory in Sham, and among them was Bilal. I think Mu'adh bin Jabal mentioned this, so they wrote to Umar bin Al-Khattab, suggesting that he do as the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did in Khaibar. But he refused and they persisted, so he supplicated against them, saying: 'O Allah, suffice me with Bilal and his companions.' All of this indicates that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, saw it as beneficial to distribute the lands and sought to win over the hearts of the conquerors. And if they were not pleased with leaving the lands, the argument for distributing them according to what was established from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , in his distribution of Khaibar remains valid. However, Zubayr bin Al-Awwam, Bilal, his companions, and Mu'adh doubted the narrator Umar regarding what he saw. And Allah knows best. We have also narrated from Umar regarding the conquest of As-Sawad and its distribution among the conquerors, until their hearts were won over by giving them what was in line with the words of others. This has been mentioned in its appropriate place in the abridged reports, if Allah wills."

[AI] Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, had given us things that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us for, but we disliked them. However, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ insisted and accepted them. So, O man, seek assistance with them in your religion and worldly affairs. Abu Obaidah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated to us that Abu Abdullah, the Hafiz, informed us that I am Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Farras, the jurist of Mecca. Bakr ibn Sahl al-Dimyati informed us. Shuayb ibn Yahya al-Tujaybi informed us. Al-Laith ibn Saad reported from Hisham ibn Saad, who mentioned it with a similar chain of narration and mentioned what was left from the previous narration. So Umar, ﷺ , wrote, "Here I am, here I am. A caravan has come to you, the first part of which is with you and the last part is with me. Although I hope to find a way to carry it by sea. When the first part of the caravan arrived, he called Zubayr and said, "Go forth with the first part of this caravan towards Najd. Carry to me every household that you can carry to me. And for those you cannot carry, give each household a camel for what they have with them. Tell them to wear two garments and slaughter the camel. Beautify its fat, prepare its meat, tan its skin, and then take a handful of dates and a handful of flour and cook it and eat it until Allah provides for them sustenance." Zubayr refused to go out, so he said, "By Allah, you will not find the like of it until you leave this world." Then he called another person whom he thought was Talhah, but he too refused. Then he called Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, and he went out to do that. He mentioned the remaining part of the narration similarly.

On the day when Mecca was conquered, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave protection to the People except four men and two women and he named them. Ibn AbuSarh was one of them. He then narrated the tradition. He said: Ibn AbuSarh hid himself with Uthman ibn Affan. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the people to take the oath of allegiance, he brought him and made him stand before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Messenger of Allah, receive the oath of allegiance from him. He raised his head and looked at him thrice, denying him every time. After the third time he received his oath. He then turned to his Companions and said: Is not there any intelligent man among you who would stand to this (man) when he saw me desisting from receiving the oath of allegiance, and kill him? They replied: We do not know, Messenger of Allah, what lies in your heart; did you not give us an hint with your eye? He said: It is not proper for a Prophet to have a treacherous eye. Abu Dawud said: 'Abd Allah (b. Abi Sarh) was the foster brother of 'Uthman, and Walid b. 'Uqbah was his brother by mother, and 'Uthman inflicted on him hadd punishment when he drank wine. (the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abu Bakr was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar stood up and said, "By Allah! Someone said, "You have killed Sad bin Ubada." 'Umar said, "Allah has killed him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3667)

Why did you not gesture to us with your eyes?' He said: 'It is not befitting for a Prophet that his eyes be deceitful.'" [AI] "Mawla ibn Umar says, 'The people have gained victory in Sham, as Bilal, who I believe resembles Muadh bin Jabal, is among them.' So they wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab, 'Indeed, this booty that we have gained is one-fifth for you and what remains belongs to us. None of it is to be given to anyone else, just as the Prophet ﷺ did with Khaybar.' Umar wrote back, 'It is not as you have said, but I will uphold it for the Muslims. Review the book and consult them, and if they agree, I am willing. But when they refused, Umar stood up and prayed against them, saying, 'O Allah, spare me Bilal and the companions of Bilal.' The outcome was such that all of them died.' The sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'His statement is not intended to deny what they argued about the division of Khaybar. We have heard it narrated from Umar through the Prophet ﷺ, and it is similar that he did not intend with it what you have said. The benefit is not in what you have said, but the benefit is that I upheld it for the Muslims.' He chose to refuse their share because of what he hoped for in their allegiance, and they refused what was rightfully theirs. However, when they refused, the ruling to take it from their hands and confiscate it was not imposed on them. But he prayed against them because they opposed him in what he saw as beneficial. If they had agreed, the people and their followers would have agreed, and the hadith is mutawatir. Allah knows best, and we have heard it narrated in the Book of Division in the conquest of Egypt that Umar saw it and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam saw it, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided Khaybar."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed away, and Abu Bakr was appointed as his successor. Those Arabs who had disbelieved continued to do so. Umar ibn Al-Khattab said to Abu Bakr, "How can you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, "There is no god but Allah," and whoever says, "There is no god but Allah," his wealth and his life will be protected except for what is justified and his reckoning is with Allah?'" Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, I will fight whoever separates prayer and zakat, for indeed, zakat is the right of wealth. By Allah, if they withheld from me a small cord that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , I would fight them for withholding it." Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, "By Allah, this is only because I saw Allah had expanded the chest of Abu Bakr for fighting, so I knew it was the truth." Qutaybah narrated to us, Abu Sa'eed ibn Abi 'Amr told us, Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm narrated to us, Rabee'ah said, "Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'This is like the two hadiths before it, which were general regarding the polytheists. However, what is intended in them, and Allah knows best, is the polytheistic people of the idols. There was no one from the people of the Book, apart from the Jews in Al-Madinah, who were allies of the Ansar. The Ansar were the first to gather as Muslims without any enmity toward the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . They bid farewell to the Jews, without showing hostility in words or actions. Until the Battle of Badr, they did not speak openly against the Prophet or incite against him. So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , killed some of them. In the Hijaz, I only knew of the Jews and a few Christians in Najran who were adversaries. The Magians were in Hajar, Barbary lands, and Fars, far removed from the Hijaz. Apart from them, the polytheistic people of the idols were numerous.'"
